SCOUSER TOMMIES: A CLUB LIKE NO OTHER

SCOUSER TOMMIES: A CLUB LIKE NO OTHER

Jim Boardman and Jay Reid return for a new episode of Scouser Tommies, looking ahead to the pre-season tour and the season itself, as well as discussing the latest transfer stories. First of all, however, is the first chance for Jay and Jim to talk about the shocking and sudden loss of Diogo Jota. They discuss the impact of his passing on the club – players, coaches, staff, and fans – and even the wider footballing world. The club’s handling of the tragedy has been perfect, including the decision to retire Diogo’s No. 20 shirt, and it has been moving to see just how far and wide the tributes have come from. The Reds have now returned to action, with their first pre-season game a win over Preston last weekend. As Jay explains, it was odd to see the players still wearing last season’s shirts, but Nike have clearly stuck to their guns over their contract with the Reds. It won’t be until after the tour of Japan that we see our players donning the new Adidas offerings – not that it’s stopped said shirts from appearing elsewhere. The recruitment team at Anfield have already been busy this summer, mostly with players coming in, and the latest stories suggest there is still plenty of money available to spend. Jim and Jay discuss what this might mean for next season in terms of challenging on all fronts. With PSR (Profitability and Sustainability Rules) still in place, clubs are going to have to be more careful about how and when they spend their money. However, it seems Liverpool have plenty of headroom given the stadium expansion, strong commercial performance, and even stronger on-pitch performance. Not spending money for the sake of it last summer hasn’t done any harm either. Money isn’t everything, of course, and whilst plenty of it is still needed to sign players of the quality required to improve Liverpool, there’s far more to signing for the Reds than that. To fit in at Anfield, money would not be the clincher for the right kind of player. Jay and Jim talk about why playing at Anfield will be such a draw for potential new signings, and why it might just be what makes it so difficult for other clubs to hold onto their stars. Time For Liverpool To Prove Nice Guys Can Finish First

Bias exists in football, there is no doubt about that. We all overly heap praise on the teams we support and the players we love, while those we dislike must do something magical to earn a similar level of adoration. One thing that has nothing to do with favouritism, however, is just what a likeable bunch...

Kiev Just The Start For Klopp’s Exciting Reds

For many, in fact a whole generation of Liverpool fans only slightly younger than me, the Champions League Final in Kiev could well be their biggest night of supporting Liverpool Football Club. Istanbul and the glory that it provided was 13 solid years ago, and whilst the Reds came close to winning the Premier...

Liverpool’s Triumphs, Trophies and Transfers

With Liverpool on the brink of European glory while being linked to half of Europe the obvious question is; how much of a boost can the Reds expect in the transfer window should they return home from Kiev with number six? Will the top talents be drawn by the possibility of playing for the...

Organising Chaos Against Real Madrid

I shared a thread on Twitter recently about my thoughts on how Liverpool can beat Real Madrid, and it received such positive feedback that I’ve decided to expand on it here. The thread is linked below for those that want to check it out: https://twitter.com/DistanceCovered/status/996345845749637120 Now, as I’ve mentioned in the thread, the key factor when...

I’m a wreck….but just maybe! | Countdown to Kiev

I'm a wreck. Tossing and turning at night. Nervous. Worried. It's not because this is my first article in god knows how long. It's not because I'm worried that Jack Butland may be joining Jurgen's red army. It's all down to the big one. Saturday evening against Real Madrid... European royalty no doubt. I'm convincing myself it'll be...

Trent Alexander-Arnold: The Rise of a Local Star

A local lad from West Derby, Trent Alexander-Arnold embodies the very spirit and culture of the city of Liverpool. Growing up within walking distance of Melwood, he would watch Steven Gerrard, Xabi Alonso and Jamie Carragher through cracks in the wall. He knows the city, its people and its values: he just gets it. Since...

What to Expect When Expecting a Naby

It’s clearly an exciting time to be a Liverpool fan. A Champions League final in Kiev awaits, with the Reds once again at the forefront of European football’s greatest night. Meanwhile, the squad itself continues to grow and develop at the behest of its German architect, led by the season’s most scintillating attack. That’s not to...

Could Kiev Be A Shot In The Arm For Confident Reds?

Confidence is a funny thing. Just look at Dominic Solanke for example. Having struggled in front of goal all season, he took his goal against Brighton on the final day of the season like a world class striker, having played himself into a bit of form with some excellent play in the preceding 51...

Win!

Though I know I'll never lose affection For people and things that went before I know I'll often stop and think about them In my life, I love you more Allow me to explain if you will. You’ll need coffee. Tissues optional. Heart necessary. Fortitude compulsory. If 2011 was the season that started me, this season could so simply...

If you’ve somehow avoided listening to the viral clip below, maybe you’ve been trying to calculate the ideal combination of trains, planes and automobiles to get yourself to Kiev. Maybe you’ve had your head in YouTube clips of Nebil Fekir and Yerry Mina. Regardless, it's time to get with the program and listen to...

AIPro's Dave Hendrick took his A-Eye Scouted series to Spain this week for a look at La Liga. Journalist Karl Matchett was along for the ride to give his take on eight hidden gems of Spanish football that could be a fit for the Reds. I'm not sure which contributor was Don Quixote and...

Momentum – Assessing Liverpool’s Domestic Progress

Progress is one of the big buzzwords around Jürgen Klopp’s Liverpool at the moment. The club has finished in the top four for the second season in a row, ensuring back to back Champions League campaigns for the first time since Rafa Benitez in 2009. Moreover, the club has backed that up by making...

Drink In Every Second Of Liverpool’s Champions League Final Build-Up

Not every football supporter is lucky enough to have a Champions League final to look forward to. Some will never experience it. Most have already erased football from their minds, for the time being, recharging the batteries and focusing on other interests, prior to the World Cup taking over their summer. That couldn’t be further from...

The Other Battle To Reach The Champions League Final

While Liverpool had to negotiate Germany’s most recent hipster team in Hoffenheim before seeing off Maribor, Seville, Spartak Moscow, Porto, the English League champions and the conquerors of FC Barcelona, their fans face an equally rocky path on their way to the final on 26th May. To get to Kiev, our fans – many of...

Liverpool 4-0 Brighton: A Tactical Breakdown

What a season. Liverpool have qualified for their second consecutive Champions League campaign by securing automatic qualification for the first time since 2008/09. They have also have finished with 75 points, one less than last season's tally (76), which is also the record for fourth spot. Mo Salah has broken the all-time Premier League...

Liverpool’s Problems Defending Crosses

Since Virgil van Dijk joined the club in January, there's no doubting that our defence has drastically improved. Whether this is totally down to the towering Dutchman or a combination of factors including the re-introduction of Loris Karius in goal and the ever improving performances of Andy Robertson at left-back is up for debate....

Observations as Reds secure Top 4 with an Anfield thrashing

Liverpool booked a place in the group stages of the UEFA Champions League for next season, with an easy 4-0 win over Brighton at Anfield. Mo Salah and Dejan Lovren put the Reds in command at half-time, before Dominic Solanke and Andy Robertson scored their first goals for the club, to put the gloss...

Liverpool 4-0 Brighton: Man of the Match

It was close to a perfect afternoon for Champions League final-bound Liverpool on Sunday as they emphatically sealed a top-four spot with a 4-0 demolition of Brighton. A string of sloppy domestic displays meant the top-four race was still just about alive at kick-off, but the defensively-assured and offensively-magnificent Reds soon put their qualification beyond...

Liverpool 4-0 Brighton: Match Review as Reds Sign Off In Style as Kiev Awaits

Jurgen Klopp was adamant attentions must be solely placed on Brighton this week, waving away the English media who were fixated on a date with destiny in Kiev. His players duly responded, signing off their Premier League campaign in perfect style as they dominated Brighton from start to finish. There were yet more individual records...

Player Ratings As Liverpool Head To Kiev On A High

That'll do nicely for a final day. Liverpool 4-0 Brighton, Salah breaking records whilst Solanke and Robertson finally bag. There was even space for Dejan Lovren to lamp one into the corner with his head. Chelsea's loss combined with Spurs' win meant that it didn't matter anyway regarding league position, but it was the perfect...

Mohamed Salah to remain at Liverpool despite Real Madrid interest

Whenever a player emerges as one of the world’s best, they always end up being linked with the top European clubs. It’s inevitable. This season, Mohamed Salah has become one of the hottest names in world football thanks to his sensational campaign with Liverpool. Salah has only been at Anfield for one season, following his...

Mina, Yerry unlikely but still important for Liverpool

Liverpool supporters woke up to some surprising claims from Ignacio Miguelez on Latin American football show, ChiriLatino, breaking “exclusive news” that the Reds had made an agreement with Barcelona to take young centre-back Yerry Mina on loan for next season. https://twitter.com/chirilatino/status/994734988280188928 Well, that’s that then. Right? Many outlets seemed to take this as fact, or close to...

Liverpool’s Other Fekirs | Transfer Rumour Round-Up

The sudden explosion of rumours surrounding the possible transfer of Lyon's Nabil Fekir has sucked all of the oxygen out of the Twittersphere. In the shadow of an impending mega-deal, stories of Ukrainian backup goalkeepers, heists from rival youth academies and pricy Portuguese B-teamers can barely buy a click. Poor ol' Sega Diallo can...

Liverpool v Brighton Preview – Key Battles

It is the last game of the season, and Liverpool have their Top 4 destiny in their own hands. However, it is something that the Reds should have signed off and sealed a few weeks ago. In the middle of the exertions in continental competition, Jurgen Klopp's men have only picked up 6 points in...

They have led their teams, Real Madrid and Liverpool, into the Champions League final and their attacking brilliance should decide the outcome of the big game. Ronaldo has won the Ballon...
