Scouser Tommies: SHOOTS OF OPTIMISM

Scouser Tommies: SHOOTS OF OPTIMISM

In this final Scouser Tommies episode of 2025, Jim Boardman and Jay Reid look back not just at the last week of Liverpool action but at a record-breaking roller-coaster of a calendar year, with the highs of that title win starting to feel like a lifetime ago when the Reds went through a slump they looked incapable of getting out of. There’s also a look ahead, not just to the busy festive period but to the year in front of us. Two wins, with two clean sheets, is more like we’d expect from the Reds, and although it doesn’t yet make up for that terrible streak, as Jay points out, there are some shoots of optimism. The results are better, the performances have improved, but perhaps most importantly there has finally been a tactical shift from the boss that gets the best out of the squad he has at his disposal. The optimism is tempered with caution, because whilst the new tactics have been fruitful, it’s only a matter of time before these are sussed out too by opposition bosses. For Jim, it is vital that Slot reacts if and when that does happen, because during that slump Liverpool weren’t just regularly beaten, they were regularly hammered. Jay is delighted to see Milos Kerkez finally being deployed in a way that we saw him play before he arrived at Anfield, something he’s asked for all season on this show. Similarly, on the opposite flank, Joe Gomez was allowed to play like a full-back - getting an assist too - rather than as a converted centre-back. Back-to-basics defending and better positional discipline have made a difference, and as Jay points out, so has the freedom and discipline of Jones, Gravenberch, Szoboszlai and Mac Allister to rotate in midfield while ensuring defensive gaps were filled. Playing the best players in their best positions can also be a huge help to a side that’s struggling. Jim notes that Hugo Ekitiké looks like an "edge-of-the-seat" player, the kind you know will put chances away. The two braces in two successive games are just a part of what he’s offering up front. Isak might be the record signing and might need games to get fit, but, as Jay points out, it won’t have done Hugo’s confidence a lot of good to be dropped for a player who, despite the price tag, is nowhere near ready to be a first-choice Reds striker. His time will come, that much seems certain, but maybe it will come sooner if he’s partnered with the confident and in-form Frenchman. As we look ahead to a busy festive period - and to 2026 itself - Jay and Jim wonder what the new year might bring. Will the centre-backs get some cover, some competition, maybe even an eventual successor to Virgil? Arne Slot seems safe for now, and the current form is encouraging, but will he still be in his job by the start of the new season? Expectations at Anfield remain high, but there’s a lot of work to be done to live up to them, regardless of what happened last season. The festive period offers a good chance to make inroads towards meeting those demands. Four games that Liverpool should be able to get at least 10 points from, all in the league as the Champions League has its winter break. One game at a time and all that, but get these four games right and the next one, against Arsenal, may have a very different feel to it than might have been expected a couple of weeks ago. The first of those four is against Tottenham, a fixture that has had its fair share of goals over the years. The away fixture last term saw Slot’s side concede three, but unlike this season they managed to come away with all three points, bagging six of their own. The home fixture was, of course, memorable for reasons beyond that one match itself and the six goals it featured, because it was the one that finally clinched the title for the Reds. As always, there’s time to chuckle at the mentality of the old neighbours, who just can’t break out of type. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

Henderson sings praises of team’s young stars after impressive performances against Ajax

Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson was full of praise for the team's young stars after Tuesday night's Champions League win over Ajax at Anfield. With Alisson Becker sustaining an injury, Jürgen Klopp made the brave decision to go with 22-year-old Caoimhin Kelleher in goals for The Reds instead of the more experienced Adrián. In defence, Neco Williams,...

Fabinho Proving Himself As Top Class Liverpool Defender

After taking a few months to settle into his new surroundings after his move from Monaco, Fabinho has consistently been brilliant for Liverpool since joining the club from Monaco in the summer of 2018. As the teams defensive midfield general, the long-legged Brazilian played a prominent role in the Reds having the best Premier League...

Top 5 Liverpool FC Games of the 2010s

Whatever negative connotations you can come up with to describe the year 2020, it does have an upside to it: having all the extra time to catch up on hobbies and entertainment. In that spirit, now is a greater time than ever to re-watch the historical moments of football that transpired in the last decade...

Kelleher delights in Champions League debut success

Liverpool's Caoimhin Kelleher impressed on his Champions League debut, helping The Reds to a 1-0 win over Dutch giants Ajax. Curtis Jones' second-half goal was all that separated the sides at the final whistle and there was no bigger smile in Anfield than that on goalkeeper Kelleher's face. The young Irishman played a huge part,...

Three Gini Wijnaldum Replacements

It’s just as well Liverpool didn’t sell Gini Wijnaldum in the summer. At the time, It was a divisive topic, with it being the last real opportunity for the Reds to cash in the Dutchman before his contract expires. Despite the addition of Thiago, the former Newcastle midfielder stayed at Anfield. But now, as...

Liverpool Win The Jota & Werner Transfer Saga

Liverpool's second choices in the transfer market have come up trumps in recent years. In the summer of 2016, the Reds were heavily linked with a move for Mario Gotze, a player who enjoyed his best footballing days under the management of Jurgen Klopp at Borussia Dortmund. The German, however, opted to rejoin Dortmund from...

Liverpool Seal Qualification After Ajax Win

Liverpool qualified for the last sixteen of the Champions League after a 1-0 win over Ajax at Anfield. Curtis Jones scored the only goal of a scrappy game as the rotated and depleted Reds dug deep to seal the victory. The three points -- plus Midtjylland drawing away to Atalanta -- means the 2019 Champions...

Will this be Liverpool’s starting eleven to face Ajax tonight at Anfield?

Liverpool meet Dutch giants Ajax tonight at Anfield in the Champions League. Jürgen Klopp has more difficult decisions to make regarding his starting eleven. James Milner was the latest Liverpool player to be added to The Reds' ever-growing injury list after picking up an injury against Brighton in Saturday's 1-1 draw. Milner will therefore miss tonight's...

Tactical Breakdown: Brighton 1-1 Liverpool

Before looking at tactics I think it's important to preface any tactical discussion within the unique circumstances players, managers and clubs find themselves in, especially Liverpool FC. Jürgen Klopp's team is currently in the midst of a season in which their pre-season was disrupted, their transfer plans unexpectedly affected and in which games are being...

Henderson concedes it was “very frustrating” to come away from Brighton game with only a point

Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson couldn't hide his disappointment after his side had to settle for a 1-1 draw in their clash with Brighton on Saturday. Diogo Jota gave The Reds the lead on the hour but a late penalty for an Andy Robertson challenge on Danny Welbeck was converted by Pascal Groβ. Speaking to Liverpoolfc.com about...

Replacing Gini Wijnaldum: Yves Bissouma

Liverpool will need to bring in a midfielder when the season ends. Gini Wijnaldum’s future is still up in the air, Jordan Henderson has picked up a few knocks recently and isn’t getting any younger. Naby Keita can’t go ten games without an injury and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain has similar bad luck. Thiago, due to...

Injuries and VAR distract from below-par performances

It's hard to believe that Liverpool are on the cusp of the Round of 16 in the Champions League and sitting pretty among the early pace-setters in the Premier League. Saturday's 1-1 draw away to Brighton certainly detracted from what has been a solid start to the season. Yes, it was a draw away at a...

5 players Liverpool could sign to cover defensive injuries this January

Liverpool have endured something of a mixed bag so far this season. Emerging as the winners of a seven-goal thriller against Leeds on the opening day, they began their campaign as defending Champions strongly, with victories over Chelsea and Arsenal following. Whilst a rare off day saw them on the wrong side of a...

Brighton and Hove Albion 1-1 Liverpool: Who Was Man of the Match?

Liverpool were denied all 3 points at the Amex Stadium against Brighton and Hove Albion by a last-minute VAR-ridden penalty. It wasn’t the best of performances by The Reds but Diogo Jota’s excellent opener looking to have been enough to give Liverpool the win. Unfortunately, those incompetent imbeciles at Stockley Park felt the need...

Brighton 1-1 Liverpool: Key stats as Reds denied another ugly win

Liverpool missed an opportunity to go three points clear at the top of the Premier League ahead of Chelsea vs Spurs after Brighton pegged them back with a stoppage-time penalty. It was another dispiriting afternoon for the Reds, with two disallowed goals and an injury to James Milner adding to their misery. Here are the headline...

Tactical Breakdown: Liverpool 0-2 Atalanta

Gian Piero Gasperini's Atalanta is a fascinating side. In their 0-5 loss to Liverpool at the Bergamo Stadium they displayed a number of interesting tactical concepts that in themselves were reasonable, astute and innovative, but were ruthlessly dismembered by a Klopp side at its cutting edge best. Central to that performance was the ability...

Brighton 1-1 Liverpool – Player Ratings as late penalty pegs Reds back

Liverpool were held to a 1-1 draw against Brighton & Hove Albion at the Amex Stadium on Saturday afternoon, after more VAR drama, that saw the Reds have two goals disallowed, and Brighton given a penalty in stoppage time, which Pascal Gross scored to equalise. Liverpool took the lead in the second half through Diogo...

Liverpool Move To Top Of League Despite Brighton Draw

More VAR controversy ensued as Liverpool moved to the top of the Premier League table, despite conceding a late goal to draw 1-1 at Brighton. The Reds took the lead early in the second half with a well-worked Diogo Jota goal, but Brighton -- with their second penalty kick of the day, after Neal Maupay...

Firmino Freed By Ball Hungry Midfielders

Roberto Firmino's form noticeably went into a nosedive in January of 2020. The trademark tactical discipline and high octane work-rate remained, but the Brazilian's soft touch, penetrative passing, and calm head in front of goal disappeared somewhat. The 29-year-old's lack of goals -- the former Hoffenheim attacking midfielder went almost the entire league campaign without scoring...

Neco Williams And The Toxic Culture of Scapegoating

Liverpool, as a collective, were poor in their 2-0 defeat at Anfield to Atalanta in the Champions League this past week. Jurgen Klopp -- wary of the physical toll that a stupidly compacted season will take on his players -- made a raft of changes and his team, predictably played with a lack of synergy...

Jürgen Klopp pays tribute to the late Diego Maradona

Jürgen Klopp had plenty on his mind following Liverpool's 2-0 defeat at home to Atalanta in the Champions League on Wednesday night. Yet, The Reds boss still took time in his post-match press conference to share his thoughts on one the passing of one of the greatest football players of all time. Diego Maradona passed...

Replacing Gini Wijnaldum: Youri Tielemans

Liverpool will need to bring in a midfielder when the season ends. Gini Wijnaldum’s future is still up in the air, Jordan Henderson has picked up a few knocks recently and isn’t getting any younger. Maturing Curtis Jones comes of age at Liverpool

Liverpool's 3-0 victory over Leicester was another sign that the Reds are again the team to beat in the Premier League this season. Regardless of how highly you rate Brendan Rodgers and his Foxes side, they turned up to Anfield as a genuine threat to Liverpool's long unbeaten home run, especially with Jurgen Klopp tackling...

Lethargic Liverpool Look Lame As Atalanta Win

Liverpool fell to a 2-0 defeat to Atalanta at Anfield in the Champions League. Goals from Josip Ilicic and Robin Gosens sealed a deserved win for the Italians in a drab affair, marshalled by a referee, Carlos del Cerro from Spain, who was lax when it came to punishing overly physical play. The Reds, meanwhile, who...

Five Centre-backs Jurgen Klopp Should Consider In January To Ease Defensive Woes

Virgil Van Dijk and Joe Gomez are unlikely to play again this season, while the club did not replace Dejan Lovren after selling him to Zenit Saint Petersburg. That has left...

The Reds beat their Serie A visitors 5-0 in Italy earlier this month on a night when Diogo Jota was the star man, bagging a hat-trick for himself. Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mané...
