The Transfer Show: Defensive Targets Vanishing as Liverpool Wait

As Liverpool delay major recruitment until the summer, Trev Downey and Dave Davis examine the danger of watching defensive targets slip away. From Guéhi’s move to Manchester City to Chelsea’s pursuit of Jacquet, they discuss how the market is thinning rapidly. The conversation covers Liverpool’s interest in Van de Ven and Bastoni, concerns over price, injuries and tactical fit, and the unresolved futures of Konaté and Robertson. This cut highlights the risk of entering the summer needing multiple defenders in a market where elite options are already being removed. Learn more about your ad choices. Scouser Tommies: GREASY HANDS

Scouser Tommies: GREASY HANDS

Jim Boardman and Jay Reid are back to sift through the ups and downs of another strange week for the Reds. From the exasperation of a boring draw at home against Burnley to the satisfaction of a job well done in Marseille. Which version of LFC will turn up next? What we hope for and what we get might not be the same. The unbeaten run continues but what we saw at the weekend is nowhere near what any Liverpool fan wants to see, as a loud if not sizeable minority made clear at the end of the game. The frustration is understandable, and if you’ve bought your ticket you can make noise in whatever way you choose, but Jim reckons it’s a bit early to be shouting from the stands, pantomime style, it’s not what we do. As Jay points out, the vast majority of Reds fans in the ground were just as frustrated, given the conversations underway as they made their way out of the ground. Sometimes it’s better to be quiet if you’ve nothing positive to shout about. Which goes a long way to explaining why Anfield is so quiet this season. There will no doubt be some claiming that the jeers spurred Slot and his players on to victory in the Champions League, but it’s more likely to be because the opposition didn’t play the low block that most of the world now knows is Arne’s kryptonite. With the Reds’ next opponents not known for using it, is there a chance that Liverpool could register their first league win of 2026? It’s not just the results. It’s not just the annoyance at seeing everyone above Liverpool slip up and missing out on capitalising on it. It’s not just the constant use of stats to justify another awful game. It’s getting boring to watch Liverpool, with the “crab football”, as Jay puts it, showing no signs of going away. The signs of how good Liverpool can be, the injection of threat from fullbacks being able to play out wide and create, the invention of Dom at set pieces, the continued prowess of the man between the sticks, is all great to see, a boost after the boos. But then you glance at the league table and see what’s been thrown away. Also this week there’s time to have a quick look at the football equivalent of the "Rich List" and the oddities of how the different Premier League clubs’ turnover is broken down. The hosts can’t think why one club might have half the matchday revenue of their rival Premier League clubs, while bringing in far more from sponsorship and commercial. The figures also serve as a reminder of one of the major reasons it is vital to qualify for the Champions League. Money, in case you were wondering. The new Champions League format makes it very difficult not to get into the knockout phase, and a win at home in the last fixture of the league phase will mean the Reds make the last 16. At that point, if the draw is kinder than last year, it’s not out of the question that Liverpool go all the way. But if that journey is running alongside a continued inability to win games in the league it could be a bizarre situation this summer. A nice problem to have, of course, but there’s still a long way to go. Meanwhile it’s probably all been a bit confusing for the neighbours. You win a match, but you help your most hated enemy close the gap above them. You think you’re helping your old mate accelerate to glory, but they fall over too. Learn more about your ad choices. Brighton 1-1 Liverpool: Key stats as Reds denied another ugly win

It was another dispiriting afternoon for the Reds, with two disallowed goals and an injury to James Milner adding to their misery. Here are the headline...

Tactical Breakdown: Liverpool 0-2 Atalanta

Gian Piero Gasperini's Atalanta is a fascinating side. In their 0-5 loss to Liverpool at the Bergamo Stadium they displayed a number of interesting tactical concepts that in themselves were reasonable, astute and innovative, but were ruthlessly dismembered by a Klopp side at its cutting edge best. Central to that performance was the ability...

Liverpool Move To Top Of League Despite Brighton Draw

More VAR controversy ensued as Liverpool moved to the top of the Premier League table, despite conceding a late goal to draw 1-1 at Brighton. The Reds took the lead early in the second half with a well-worked Diogo Jota goal, but Brighton -- with their second penalty kick of the day, after Neal Maupay...

Firmino Freed By Ball Hungry Midfielders

Roberto Firmino's form noticeably went into a nosedive in January of 2020. The trademark tactical discipline and high octane work-rate remained, but the Brazilian's soft touch, penetrative passing, and calm head in front of goal disappeared somewhat. The 29-year-old's lack of goals -- the former Hoffenheim attacking midfielder went almost the entire league campaign without scoring...

Neco Williams And The Toxic Culture of Scapegoating

Liverpool, as a collective, were poor in their 2-0 defeat at Anfield to Atalanta in the Champions League this past week. Jurgen Klopp -- wary of the physical toll that a stupidly compacted season will take on his players -- made a raft of changes and his team, predictably played with a lack of synergy...

Jürgen Klopp pays tribute to the late Diego Maradona

Jürgen Klopp had plenty on his mind following Liverpool's 2-0 defeat at home to Atalanta in the Champions League on Wednesday night. Yet, The Reds boss still took time in his post-match press conference to share his thoughts on one the passing of one of the greatest football players of all time. Diego Maradona passed...

Liverpool will need to bring in a midfielder when the season ends. Gini Wijnaldum’s future is still up in the air, Jordan Henderson has picked up a few knocks recently and isn’t getting any younger. Naby Keita can’t go ten games without an injury and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain has similar bad luck. Thiago, due to...

Maturing Curtis Jones comes of age at Liverpool

Liverpool's 3-0 victory over Leicester was another sign that the Reds are again the team to beat in the Premier League this season. Regardless of how highly you rate Brendan Rodgers and his Foxes side, they turned up to Anfield as a genuine threat to Liverpool's long unbeaten home run, especially with Jurgen Klopp tackling...

Lethargic Liverpool Look Lame As Atalanta Win

Liverpool fell to a 2-0 defeat to Atalanta at Anfield in the Champions League. Goals from Josip Ilicic and Robin Gosens sealed a deserved win for the Italians in a drab affair, marshalled by a referee, Carlos del Cerro from Spain, who was lax when it came to punishing overly physical play. The Reds, meanwhile, who...

Five Centre-backs Jurgen Klopp Should Consider In January To Ease Defensive Woes

Liverpool could be forced to splash out in the January transfer window after suffering an injury crisis at the heart of their defence. Virgil Van Dijk and Joe Gomez are unlikely to play again this season, while the club did not replace Dejan Lovren after selling him to Zenit Saint Petersburg. That has left...

The Reds beat their Serie A visitors 5-0 in Italy earlier this month on a night when Diogo Jota was the star man, bagging a hat-trick for himself. Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mané...

Tactical Breakdown: Liverpool 3-0 Leicester

With injuries aplenty following the international break and a deluge of fixtures awaiting Jürgen Klopp's red men, an acceptable result seemed more important than a strong performance. With Salah, Alexander-Arnold and Thiago all unavailable, the champions were without their three best creative players, leaving the creative burden upon a midfield and forward line that has...

How Erling Haaland can be the next evolutionary step for Liverpool

There is a popular cliche in football that if you are standing still, you are going backwards. It alludes to the fact that time never stands still; and that football, like other sports, is cyclical.  In industry, continuous improvement principles are applied: just because something is working well, it doesn’t mean it will always remain...

Jürgen Klopp gives injury update on Mohamed Salah, Xherdan Shaqiri and Naby Keïta

Liverpool 3-0 Leicester: Player ratings as Reds make more history

Liverpool have extended their home unbeaten run into club-record territory following a hugely impressive victory against high-flying Leicester. But the Reds scoffed at that suggestion, powering to victory with strikes from Diogo Jota and...

Rampant Reds Flatten Foxes

Liverpool comprehensively defeated Leicester City 3-0 at Anfield to move level with Tottenham at the top of the table. A Jonny Evans own goal, and headers from Diogo Jota and Roberto Firmino sealed the victory for the Reds in an imperious performance of attacking football. Goalkeeper Alisson with Huge Hand In Liverpool Defensive Solidity

Joe Gomez...

Will this be Liverpool’s starting eleven to play Leicester City on Sunday?

Liverpool welcome league leaders Leicester City to Anfield this Sunday evening in what should be an enthralling Premier League clash. Will Rodgers prevent Liverpool setting all-time unbeaten home record?

April 23rd, 2017. Liverpool 1-2 Crystal Palace. Feels like a lifetime ago, doesn't it? At that point, Jurgen Klopp was still only in his first full season as Reds manager and his side hadn't yet played in the Champions League under him. This was still a year before the agony of Kiev, let alone the glorious...

Despite that, there has been a fair bit of doom and gloom...

Versatile Oxlade-Chamberlain Could Offer Liverpool Right-Back Solution

Jurgen Klopp loves versatile players. Whether it is James Milner, who can cover midfield or either full-back slot, or Fabinho, who is comfortable at both centre half and defensive midfield, the German places great stock in players who can cover multiple positions. With a bigger list of injuries than an army hospital, Liverpool will need to...

Liverpool assistant manager can’t wait for The Reds to settle in at new training ground

Pep Lijnders says it gives him "great satisfaction" to move to the club's new AXA Training Centre with the current squad. Liverpool's departure from Melwood - their training home for 70 years - has been well-documented in recent weeks. Now, however, Lijnders is only looking forward and to the progress he hopes the club can...
