The Transfer Show: Defensive Targets Vanishing as Liverpool Wait

The Transfer Show: Defensive Targets Vanishing as Liverpool Wait

As Liverpool delay major recruitment until the summer, Trev Downey and Dave Davis examine the danger of watching defensive targets slip away. From Guéhi’s move to Manchester City to Chelsea’s pursuit of Jacquet, they discuss how the market is thinning rapidly. The conversation covers Liverpool’s interest in Van de Ven and Bastoni, concerns over price, injuries and tactical fit, and the unresolved futures of Konaté and Robertson. This cut highlights the risk of entering the summer needing multiple defenders in a market where elite options are already being removed. Learn more about your ad choices. Trev Downey and Dave Davis assess the growing pressure on Arne Slot and why the Burnley draw became such a pivotal moment in the fan narrative. This segment looks at belief, risk and whether Liverpool are prepared to hold their nerve while the noise around the dugout continues to grow. Learn more about your ad choices. The Transfer Show: Hanging Out for the Summer at Liverpool

The Transfer Show: Hanging Out for the Summer at Liverpool

Host Trev Downey is joined by Dave Davis to explain why Liverpool’s January window was always expected to be quiet and why all serious planning has been pushed towards the summer. Drawing on recent Joyce and Steele reporting, they discuss looming contract issues involving Curtis Jones, Mohamed Salah and key decision-makers at the club, alongside the growing sense of inevitable squad churn. This is a grounded breakdown of why Liverpool believe the current group can get them into the Champions League, and why that belief is making supporters increasingly uneasy. Scouser Tommies: GREASY HANDS

Scouser Tommies: GREASY HANDS

Jim Boardman and Jay Reid are back to sift through the ups and downs of another strange week for the Reds. From the exasperation of a boring draw at home against Burnley to the satisfaction of a job well done in Marseille. Which version of LFC will turn up next? What we hope for and what we get might not be the same. The unbeaten run continues but what we saw at the weekend is nowhere near what any Liverpool fan wants to see, as a loud if not sizeable minority made clear at the end of the game. The frustration is understandable, and if you’ve bought your ticket you can make noise in whatever way you choose, but Jim reckons it’s a bit early to be shouting from the stands, pantomime style, it’s not what we do. As Jay points out, the vast majority of Reds fans in the ground were just as frustrated, given the conversations underway as they made their way out of the ground. Sometimes it’s better to be quiet if you’ve nothing positive to shout about. Which goes a long way to explaining why Anfield is so quiet this season. There will no doubt be some claiming that the jeers spurred Slot and his players on to victory in the Champions League, but it’s more likely to be because the opposition didn’t play the low block that most of the world now knows is Arne’s kryptonite. With the Reds’ next opponents not known for using it, is there a chance that Liverpool could register their first league win of 2026? It’s not just the results. It’s not just the annoyance at seeing everyone above Liverpool slip up and missing out on capitalising on it. It’s not just the constant use of stats to justify another awful game. It’s getting boring to watch Liverpool, with the “crab football”, as Jay puts it, showing no signs of going away. The signs of how good Liverpool can be, the injection of threat from fullbacks being able to play out wide and create, the invention of Dom at set pieces, the continued prowess of the man between the sticks, is all great to see, a boost after the boos. But then you glance at the league table and see what’s been thrown away. Also this week there’s time to have a quick look at the football equivalent of the "Rich List" and the oddities of how the different Premier League clubs’ turnover is broken down. The hosts can’t think why one club might have half the matchday revenue of their rival Premier League clubs, while bringing in far more from sponsorship and commercial. The figures also serve as a reminder of one of the major reasons it is vital to qualify for the Champions League. Money, in case you were wondering. The new Champions League format makes it very difficult not to get into the knockout phase, and a win at home in the last fixture of the league phase will mean the Reds make the last 16. At that point, if the draw is kinder than last year, it’s not out of the question that Liverpool go all the way. But if that journey is running alongside a continued inability to win games in the league it could be a bizarre situation this summer. A nice problem to have, of course, but there’s still a long way to go. Meanwhile it’s probably all been a bit confusing for the neighbours. You win a match, but you help your most hated enemy close the gap above them. You think you’re helping your old mate accelerate to glory, but they fall over too. Learn more about your ad choices. Oxlade-Chamberlain – Liverpool’s Mr. Irreplaceable

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain’s arrival at Anfield on deadline day of the 2017 summer window kind of went under the radar. In any other window, a £40million signing from a rival club would’ve been huge news. A statement of intent. But with reports the day prior hinting at a £200million war chest, many fans had expected...

Wave-Riding Reds Finding New Ways To Win

I know it’s popular to mock him and just generally hate him, you know, because he played for Man United for his entire career and naturally that brings animosity, but Gary Neville is a really strong pundit. His points are almost always thought out, insightful and intelligent and if nothing else, watching him full...

Liverpool 3-1 Manchester United: A Tactical Breakdown

There is no other game which manages to unnerve me like playing Manchester United does. Irrespective of form or quality, as matchday approaches, I fill with dread. On the morning of a match, I can barely eat. Perhaps it's the years of torment at school after losing, and unexplainable events which always seem to...

Liverpool v Bayern Munich: Two Giants Meet

The draw for the last 16 of the Champions League has seen Liverpool paired with Bayern Munich of Germany. To be honest, I’m elated. There’s something noble about seeing two European heavyweights meet. True, we would have much preferred to play Schalke or Porto, but as Joey ‘the Lips’ Fagan says in The Commitments ‘that would...

Liverpool 3-1 Manchester United: Who Was Man Of The Match?

The Liverpool of old may well have been held to an agonising draw after being pegged back in such disheartening circumstances, but this side were in no mood to hand Manchester United a point they simply didn't deserve. Liverpool had raced out of the blocks and had Mourinho's men on the ropes. Sadio Mane's delightful...

Fabinho orchestrates and Shaqiri sparks: Observations as Liverpool sink United

Liverpool polished off Manchester United in a 3-1 win at Anfield to regain their place at the top of the Premier League. The Reds got off to a scintillating start, setting a high tempo right from the off to push the opposition straight onto the backfoot after Sadio Mane capitalised on a tremendous lofted through-ball...

Powercube puts two past DeGea as Reds Rock United

Is Sadio Mané a player who is unaware just how close he is to greatness? Or, is he a player that thinks he's far better than he actually is? Sadio Stunner Regardless, Liverpool's left-winger was a difference maker against Manchester United in the first half. With Bobby Firmino unable to unlock the small gaps in United's...

Player Ratings as Shaqiri steals the show

“Don’t sack Mourinho, don’t sack Mourinho...” Not at all a shabby Sunday. Three goals and three points for the Reds, back to top of the league to conclude a brilliant week. We’ll worry about Wolves away tomorrow, but for now let us enjoy the delights of a first league win over Manchester United since 2014. Let’s rate...

Liverpool’s Defence is Great – Until We Get Some Injuries

It’s been a pretty good start to the season for Liverpool Football Club, all things considered. The Reds currently sit as outright leaders at the top of the Premier League, they remain unbeaten and they have just secured qualification to the knockout stages of the Champions League despite an overwhelming amount of pressure being placed...

Destiny Defying Alisson Writes His Own Script

You could write the script. It really was that predictable. Liverpool had been banging on the door all night, creating a good chance after good chance against a Napoli side that was there for the taking. Even as the time ticked away and it became abundantly clear that Liverpool’s only chance of going through...

Why Liverpool Fans Are Underrating Mo Salah

I happened to glance upon a Twitter poll last week asking who Liverpool’s best signing had been during Jurgen Klopp's tenure. I answered with my gut feeling, and along with approximately 60 per cent of the voters, opted for Virgil van Dijk, who led the way comfortably. I saw Mo Salah’s name loud and clear in...

Rivalries Within: Crossing Swords With Jose Mourinho

Ask ten football fans: which is the world’s greatest football rivalry? You will get ten different answers – if not more. A Glaswegian may tell you that nothing is as fierce as the Old Firm Derby, Celtic vs Rangers, with its backdrop of simmering political and religious tensions. Ask a Milanese: he will tell you that the...

Naby Keita Offers Liverpool Perfect Weapon to End United Hoodoo

Liverpool's recent Premier League record against Manchester United is woeful. If all matches were played without context, United would be the biggest two games of each league season for the Reds. Since Brendan Rodgers' wonderful 2013-14 side went and won 3-0 at Old Trafford, United haven't lost in the league to Liverpool. Domestically, United are eight...

Where does Mo Salah sit in the history of Liverpool?

Last season, before a ball had been kicked, Liverpool signed Mohamed Salah for around £36 million from Roma, in a move that was seen as some well-needed reinforcement at the top of the pitch. Coming off the back of Liverpool’s year almost falling off a cliff with the loss of form and Sadio Mane...

Liverpool FC and Big Chances

Big chances are a crucial part of any Premier League team’s season. They help to differentiate the quality of a team. It expands nicely on the basic idea of xG that not all shots are equal. Bobby Firmino’s tap-in from a yard against Spurs was a better quality chance than when Denis Odoi shot...

Can Liverpool Beat Manchester City in the EPL Race?

As Christmas is looming and the first half of the season in EPL is almost done, all the eyes are on Liverpool and Manchester City, the two teams that appear to be destined to finish 1 and 2 on this season’s table. The Manchester side victoriously broke into the season and looked invincible until Chelsea...

A Look at Football Through a Basketball Shaped Lens

Data analytics have come forth in leaps and bounds over the last decade or so, as football clubs around the world seek to gain an advantage in securing titles, promotion and everything in between. Key Stats as Salah seals European progression for Liverpool

You've got me on key stats for this one folk, I apologise. I'm not smart, handsome or nuanced as Tom but I'll do my best to leave you interested. I checked with Gags over whether I could do statistics on the percentage of Alisson's hair follicles that are perfectly placed (99.87%) or how many times...

Liverpool soar above Napoli to continue Champions League Run

This was Liverpool. Nail biting, mind boggling Liverpool. A night where their European fate hung in the balance, Jurgen Klopp's side flew to new heights as they soared to a 1-0 win and emerged into the knockout stages of the competition. In truth, this should've been a far healthier scoreline than it was. Sadio Mané missed...

Player ratings as Liverpool upset Ancelotti again

Carlo Ancelotti's rivalry with Liverpool would make a bloody good film, wouldn't it? Istanbul, Athens, his La Decima winning Madrid team at Anfield in 2013, and now Anfield for Liverpool 1-0 Napoli in 2018. A hair raising night, made a brilliant one by a man with the most beautiful head of hair, Alisson Becker. The Reds...

It’s A Two Horse Title Race, Get Used To It

As the full-time whistle blew on Manchester City's first league defeat of the season on Saturday evening, it wasn't just Chelsea fans celebrating. Liverpool fans knew that a Chelsea win would leave the Reds out clear at the top of the Premier League for a week at least, N'Golo Kante and David Luiz providing the...

How well is Jurgen Klopp rotating his Liverpool squad?

No Salah, no Firmino and no Mane. The seven changes Jurgen Klopp made to his starting eleven at Turf Moor raised a considerable number of eyebrows last Wednesday, not least from myself. But subsequently, having collected six points from two potentially tough away fixtures against Burnley and Bournemouth, as part of a gruelling festive...

Top, But Liverpool Have A New Type Of Battle To Face

And with a single swish of a head the whole path of the 2018-2019 season changes course. Not many Reds like David Luiz and with good reason. His two spells at Chelsea, his less than exemplary performance against Germany in the 2014 World Cup and his likeness for winning a dubious free kick means there...

Anfield nights Liverpool won’t want to repeat against Napoli

The stage is set for another famous Anfield night on Tuesday, with Liverpool's Champions League knockout round qualification on the line as they play host to Carlo Ancelotti's Napoli.
