Andoni Iraola Confirms Joe Gomez Boost Ahead of Liverpool vs Tottenham
Liverpool head coach Andoni Iraola has confirmed Joe Gomez is available for Tuesday night’s Carabao Cup meeting with Tottenham Hotspur, handing the Spaniard another defensive option at a useful moment.
Liverpool begin their campaign in the competition with a third round tie at Anfield, facing a Tottenham side arriving on Merseyside following Sunday’s 0-0 Premier League draw with Everton.
For Iraola, however, team selection could be shaped as much by workload as opposition.
Liverpool Schedule Puts Focus on Rotation
Liverpool have already been pushed through a demanding sequence of fixtures. A 2-0 Premier League victory at Ipswich Town was followed by an emotionally and physically draining 2-1 Champions League win over Atletico Madrid.
Saturday then brought a different challenge. Fulham frustrated Liverpool in a 0-0 draw at Anfield, with Iraola admitting afterwards that his players had lacked some freshness following their European exertions.
He had already attempted to manage the situation by making three changes, bringing Victor Munoz, Ryan Gravenberch and Kostas Tsimikas into his starting line-up.
Another game three days later makes further rotation highly likely.
Joe Gomez Returns to Liverpool Contention
Gomez could therefore become particularly important against Tottenham Hotspur.
The defender has returned to team training following his hamstring problem and Iraola confirmed on Monday that he is ready to be considered.
“Joe is training with the team and is available for tomorrow. It’s a matter of deciding how much he can play,” Iraola said ahead of the Tottenham clash.

That final sentence is significant. Availability does not automatically mean a starting place, particularly with a player returning from injury.
Iraola and his medical staff must judge how many minutes Gomez can safely handle. With Liverpool competing across several fronts, taking unnecessary risks in September would make little sense.
Tottenham Hotspur Test Offers Iraola Selection Opportunity
Tottenham should provide serious opposition at Anfield, although their own weekend preparations were hardly ideal. A goalless draw against Everton means both teams enter the Carabao Cup looking for a stronger attacking performance.
For Liverpool, this competition also provides Iraola with an opportunity to learn more about his squad.
His first weeks at Anfield have already included Premier League and Champions League football. The Carabao Cup introduces another demand, particularly when fixtures arrive every few days.
Managing that schedule will be one of Iraola’s biggest challenges during his first season with Liverpool.
Gomez Boost Arrives at Useful Moment
Gomez’s return consequently feels well timed.
Liverpool need defensive depth, flexibility and players capable of covering several positions. Gomez has spent much of his career providing exactly that.
Whether Iraola starts him against Tottenham Hotspur or introduces him from the bench, getting Gomez back onto the pitch would represent another useful step.
Tuesday night is about progressing in the Carabao Cup, but Liverpool must also keep the wider season in mind. Iraola has already seen how quickly European commitments can affect Premier League performances.
Against Tottenham, his balancing act continues.
