Julian Ward Return Could Bring Liverpool Stability at Crucial Moment

Liverpool appear to be closing in on a familiar solution to one of the most important vacancies inside the club.

Julian Ward is expected to return as sporting director following Richard Hughes’ departure for Al-Hilal, according to reporting from The Athletic. After a summer of considerable change at executive level, Liverpool seem ready to turn towards somebody who already understands the machinery at Anfield.

That matters.

Ward Offers Liverpool Valuable Continuity

James Pearce, writing for The Athletic, believes Ward’s appointment would be a logical one.

“The appointment of Ward as Liverpool’s new sporting director makes a lot of sense. It will provide some much-needed continuity at a time of major upheaval behind the scenes following the summer departures of Michael Edwards and Richard Hughes.

“Having already clocked up 13 years of service to Liverpool across two spells, Ward commands the respect of FSG president Mike Gordon, who is leading the search for Hughes’ successor. Gordon has resumed oversight of the club’s day-to-day operations since Edwards left in July.”

Continuity can sometimes be mistaken for conservatism. Here, it looks more like practicality.

Liverpool have undergone significant change, and sporting directors do not operate in isolation. They work across recruitment, contracts, analytics, coaching structures and ownership. Bringing somebody into that environment who already knows the personalities and processes should reduce the adjustment period considerably.

Transfer Experience Could Prove Crucial

Ward’s previous record provides some clues about why Liverpool are prepared to return to him.

Pearce added: “Ward is well connected across the globe and has a wealth of experience in negotiating both transfer deals and contract renewals. He also knows exactly what the job involves having been Edwards’ assistant before succeeding him in 2022.”

That experience becomes particularly relevant with Liverpool already needing to plan beyond the current season.

Ward oversaw deals for Darwin Nunez and Cody Gakpo during his previous spell as sporting director, while remaining involved long enough to complete the signing of Alexis Mac Allister in 2023. He had previously played an important role in bringing Luis Diaz to Anfield.

Recruitment will always contain successes, disappointments and plenty in between. Sporting directors should therefore be judged on processes as much as individual transfers.

Liverpool Need Clarity Behind Iraola

Andoni Iraola is still establishing his Liverpool side. Giving the head coach a stable football operation above him should be a priority.

Liverpool cannot afford uncertainty around recruitment strategy, contract negotiations or squad planning as preparations for 2027 begin.

Ward already understands FSG, Mike Gordon and Liverpool’s football structure. If the appointment is completed, his immediate challenge will be making that familiarity productive rather than comfortable.

Liverpool need decisions. Ward knows where those decisions are made and how the club likes to make them.

That could make his return particularly timely.

Our View, Anfield Index Analysis

There is something reassuring about Liverpool potentially turning back to Julian Ward, although supporters will understandably want to know what comes next rather than simply celebrating the return of a familiar figure.

Ward knows Liverpool. He understands the expectations, the ownership structure and the enormous scrutiny surrounding every major transfer and contract decision. At a moment when there has already been considerable change behind the scenes, that knowledge has obvious value.

For supporters, however, the interesting question concerns how much authority Ward will have and what Liverpool’s recruitment structure will look like around him.

Iraola is building something very different on the pitch. His demands require athleticism, intensity and players capable of functioning within an aggressive man-to-man approach. Recruitment now has to reflect that identity.

Ward’s previous involvement in deals for Gakpo, Nunez, Diaz and Mac Allister demonstrates that he has operated at the sharp end of Liverpool’s recruitment machine before. He knows the pressure involved when substantial money is being committed.

What intrigues me most is the timing. Liverpool have changed manager, senior executives have departed and another major transfer cycle is already approaching.

Ward therefore would not be returning simply to maintain what existed previously. He would be helping construct what comes next.

For Liverpool supporters, that is where this appointment becomes genuinely fascinating.
