The occasion also marked an intriguing return to Merseyside for former Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso and ex-Reds captain Jordan Henderson, both now representing Chelsea. However, there was to be no happy homecoming for either man as Liverpool found a way through to the last eight.

Gakpo Responds as Liverpool Fight Back

Chelsea struck through Morgan Rogers, who converted from the penalty spot to put the visitors ahead and leave Liverpool with work to do. It was a frustrating setback for the home side, particularly in a knockout fixture where the margins for error are so small.

However, Liverpool found their equaliser through Cody Gakpo, who stepped up to convert a penalty of his own and restore parity. The Dutch international showed the composure required in a pressure situation, ensuring the Reds remained firmly in the contest.

With neither side able to find a winner before the final whistle, the tie headed straight to a penalty shootout, setting the stage for another memorable Anfield cup night.

Mamardashvili Delivers as Shootout Swings Both Ways

The shootout was anything but straightforward for Liverpool, with both sides experiencing moments when qualification appeared to be slipping from their grasp.

Chelsea’s Valentin Barco struck the woodwork, offering the Reds an early opportunity to take control. However, Kostas Tsimikas subsequently sent his effort over the crossbar, allowing the visitors back into contention.

Jordan Henderson then converted against his former club, adding another twist to an already dramatic evening. There was further frustration for Liverpool when Chelsea goalkeeper Mike Penders denied Ryan Gravenberch, seemingly handing the advantage back to the visitors.

Yet Giorgi Mamardashvili produced a crucial save to deny Emmanuel Emegha, keeping Liverpool alive and shifting the momentum once again. It was exactly the intervention the Reds needed from their goalkeeper, who delivered when the pressure was at its greatest.

Joe Gomez then stepped forward and confidently converted his penalty, leaving Chelsea defender Wesley Fofana needing to score to keep the Blues in the competition.

Fofana could not deliver. His effort sailed over the crossbar, sparking jubilant celebrations around Anfield as Liverpool secured their place in the quarter-finals.

Liverpool Find a Way Through

Cup football is rarely about perfection, and Liverpool’s victory over Chelsea was another reminder that knockout competitions are ultimately about finding a way to progress.

There were moments of frustration, missed opportunities and plenty of tension throughout the evening, but Liverpool showed enough resilience to survive a difficult examination. Gakpo’s equaliser ensured they remained in contention, Mamardashvili’s penalty save proved pivotal, and Gomez’s successful spot-kick helped put the pressure firmly back on Chelsea.

For Alonso and Henderson, it proved a disappointing return to Anfield. For Liverpool, however, the result was all that mattered.

The Reds are into the Carabao Cup quarter-finals, another opportunity for silverware remains alive, and Anfield has another dramatic cup victory to celebrate.
