Crystal Palace vs Liverpool – Premier League Preview
Date: Sunday, 8th November 2026
Venue: Selhurst Park
Kick-off: 14:00 GMT
After nine games of the new Premier League campaign, Liverpool travel to South London following back-to-back defeats against Arsenal and Fenerbahçe.
Andoni Iraola’s side have endured a frustrating week, with a narrow home defeat in the league followed by a disappointing European collapse in Turkey. While there have been encouraging signs early in the new manager’s reign, the recent results have exposed familiar problems with defensive concentration, midfield balance and squad fatigue.
Sunday’s fixture against Crystal Palace therefore carries added importance. Liverpool need a response, and another defeat would increase the pressure on a team still trying to establish its identity under new leadership.

Liverpool Need to Rediscover Their Intensity
Iraola’s preferred style requires energy, aggression, and coordinated pressing. When Liverpool execute those principles effectively, they can overwhelm opponents and create opportunities through quick transitions and sustained pressure.
However, the last two performances have highlighted how difficult that approach becomes when the midfield lacks balance or key players are struggling physically.
Against Arsenal, Liverpool worked tirelessly but could not find a way through a well-organised defensive unit. In Istanbul, the problems were more pronounced, with the Reds surrendering their lead after appearing to run out of energy.
Palace will offer another difficult test. Selhurst Park is rarely an easy place to visit, and the home side will look to make the most of their physicality, direct attacking play and the support behind them.
Liverpool must start with greater urgency, protect the central areas and avoid allowing Palace to dictate the tempo. The midfield partnership of Alexis Mac Allister and Trey Nyoni could be particularly important, with the latter continuing to impress despite his age.
Predicted Liverpool XI
Formation: 4-2-3-1
GK – Alisson Becker
RB – Ronald Araújo
CB – Jérémy Jacquet
CB – Virgil van Dijk (c)
LB – Milos Kerkez
CM – Alexis Mac Allister
CM – Trey Nyoni
AM – Florian Wirtz
RW – Cody Gakpo
LW – Bradley Barcola
CF – Alexander Isak
I expect Iraola to return to a stronger starting lineup after making changes for the European fixture. The defensive unit needs consistency, while Mac Allister and Nyoni together in the double pivot should provide a more natural balance.
Florian Wirtz is likely to return to the number 10 position, where he can influence the attacking play and connect the midfield with the forward line.
There is also a need for greater output from the front three. Alexander Isak needs better service, while Barcola and Gakpo must offer more quality in the final third. Liverpool have enough attacking talent to trouble Palace, but that potential needs to translate into goals.
🚨 Andoni Iraola wants Allison to stay at Liverpool:

Final Thoughts
This is a game Liverpool need to approach with conviction. The recent defeats should not define the season, but the response on Sunday will be an important indication of the team’s character and the progress being made under Iraola.
Palace will make life difficult, particularly at home, but Liverpool have the quality to win this fixture. The key will be restoring the intensity that has been missing in recent performances while showing greater discipline when possession is lost.
A positive result would provide some much-needed momentum heading into the international break and allow Iraola to work on the tactical issues that have become increasingly apparent.
I expect a competitive afternoon, but Liverpool has too much quality not to respond.
Steven Smith’s Score Prediction:
Crystal Palace 1–3 Liverpool
