Pep Guardiola claims that his Manchester City team has displayed its ambition and appetite for another Premier League title with the way they have pulled Liverpool’s lead back since the turn of the year.

City won 2-0 at Goodison Park on Wednesday night and that victory put the title holders back on top of the league table, albeit with a game more played than Liverpool.

Speaking after the game and as reported in the Liverpool Echo, the former Barcelona and Bayern Munich manager said:

“It is much better to be top, but we’ve played one more game. It’s the best we can do.

“The reality is we would have been one month ago 10 points behind, a few days ago we could be seven points behind. Now we are top of the league.

“The lesson is never give up. That is the lesson to all athletes. Try to win the games, because life can change immediately.

“We come from 100 points, we come from (being) champions and we are in a situation where we could have given up but it didn’t happen.

“We gave an incredible game against Liverpool. These players have shown incredible desire and performances for the last two years. How could I question them?”

City’s boss was then asked how he thought Liverpool and Jurgen Klopp would be feeling now that top spot had been taken back from them.

“I don’t know what the opponents (are thinking),” he said. “Still we have a lot of contenders to fight for the title.

“Last season we had a big advantage. I don’t know what they (Liverpool) are thinking and I don’t care really.

“There are a lot of games, believe me. Every game is tough. Everton is not an easy place to win.

Liverpool will play their game in hand this Saturday at home to Bournemouth as the title race begins to hot up. Spurs, five points back, play Leicester City at Wembley on Sunday before Guardiola’s City team face Chelsea at the Etihad Stadium later that day.
