Liverpool’s colossal centre-back Virgil van Dijk believes The Reds played “fantastic” in their 3-1 win away to Bayern Munich last night.
After a 0-0 draw at Anfield three weeks ago, Bayern Munich were made the bookies’ slight favourites to progress ahead of the return leg at the Allianz Arena. However, a professional performance from Liverpool, including a sublime display from Sadio Mané, saw Jurgen Klopp’s side triumph with an unforgettable win at the home of the Bundesliga giants.
Speaking to Liverpoolfc.com after the game, Van Dijk was asked if it was the ideal European performance from The Reds:
“Very close. I think to perform like we did, especially after our away results in the group stages, was very important.
“We knew how they would definitely set up and how they would probably come for us as well, and I think we did fantastic.
“[To celebrate with the fans] was unbelievable. They come everywhere we go and it’s always a great feeling to play for this club and I’m proud to wear this shirt.”
Asked about Mane’s contribution to the win, Van Dijk highlighted the brilliant form Liverpool’s number 10 has been in for some time now.
“Sadio has been at a different level these last weeks, months, and he is having a fantastic season.
“To score that [first] goal is obviously a big blow for them because they have to score two and for us, we were then unlucky to concede the equaliser, but the second half was outstanding.”
Van Dijk and Liverpool will find out their Champions League quarter-final opponents in the draw on Friday.
