Jurgen Klopp says Anfield crowd must continue to play part in making ground a fortress
Liverpool’s last home defeat in the Premier League came in April 2017. As we now enter 2020, Jurgen Klopp has praised the home crowd for helping to maintain that phenomenal record.
The Reds kept their 13-point lead at the top of the table after a very hard-fought home win over Wolves on Sunday. Later this week, Liverpool have two more games at Anfield. The first is against Chris Wilder’s hugely impressive Sheffield United team on Thursday night. The second is another Merseyside derby – this time in the FA Cup. With Carlo Ancelotti in charge of The Toffees, it’s sure to be a tougher challenge than the 5-2 league victory enjoyed by Liverpool in early December.
Speaking to Liverpoolfc.com, Klopp highlighted the importance of patience when it comes to breaking teams down at Anfield.
“I’m really proud of them [the players] and I really hope our supporters are proud as well.
“How I said, the rest of the season, it’s not the situation where it’s 0-0 and people can get nervous. We will not be.
“These boys showed now so often that we just fight with all that we have – that’s what we need from the crowd.
“I’m not sure which was the last home game before we played in Qatar, but I know that was kind of a nervous atmosphere. The boys really need pushing.
“The home games we have must be an advantage. We have no other advantage but at home, it must be an advantage.
“Tonight was a fight, which we obviously fought together. At the end, we won it.
“It’s hard, really hard, but nobody is moaning about that. We really don’t look for excuses. These boys throw everything in what they have and that’s what we try on the 2nd of January again.”
Thursday night’s encounter with Sheffield United is going to be another very tough fixture. It comes against the side with the joint-second best defensive record in the league and, up until last Sunday, had been undefeated away in the Premier League all season.
There is no easy route to a league title. Only the best teams can make it look like it is in any way simple.
