Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp gave an injury update regarding Jordan Henderson after The Reds’ fantastic 2-0 win over Chelsea on Sunday.
Henderson was given the man-of-the-match award after his energetic and creative performance in the Liverpool midfield. However, there were some concerns when Henderson was replaced by James Milner in the 77th minute after picking up an ankle injury.
In his post-match press conference, Klopp was asked the extent of Liverpool’s captain’s injury.
“He got a knock on his ankle, that’s pretty much all,” Klopp said. “He was fine after the game.
“A bit of pain, no problem, [he] didn’t twist [it]. It’s only painful, not a problem.”
This will be music to the ears of Reds fans. Many of whom think Klopp may have stumbled onto the perfect midfield triumvirate of Fabinho, Henderson and Naby Keita in the last two games.
Henderson has been enjoying a more advanced role in Liverpool’s midfield since he chalked up a goal and an assist in his 30-minute substitute appearance at Southampton to help his side win 3-1.
Klopp then started Henderson in that more attacking position against FC Porto, alongside Naby Keita with Fabinho sitting at the base of the midfield. It worked so well in the 2-0 Champions League win that Klopp stuck with it again for Sunday’s game against Chelsea.
Henderson provided a brilliant assist for Sadio Mané to break the deadlock in the second half. Of course, Mohamed Salah then stole the show with his piledriver of a strike to put Liverpool 2-0 up and win the game.
Liverpool now travel to face Porto on Wednesday night with the aim of progressing to the semi-finals of the Champions League where they would face either Manchester United or Barcelona.
Next Sunday, The Reds face Cardiff City in Wales as they continue to chase down Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City in this epic Premier League title race.
