Liverpool are keen to tie Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain down to a contract which would keep him at the club until 2023 at least.
The former Arsenal attacking midfielder played just a few minutes this season as he was recovering from a horrific knee injury suffered against Roma in the Champions League semi-final in April 2018.
However, ‘The Ox’ is now back fit and firing and with a full pre-season training programme endured in the coming months, he should be raring to go for the start of next season.
Before his injury, Oxlade-Chamberlain had surprised many of us by making himself one of the team’s most important midfielders, breaking the lines between midfield and attack, linking well with Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah.
He also displayed many of the exact characteristics Jurgen Klopp wants from his first-team stars. His excellent work-rate and incredible attitude on the pitch underpinned his direct football style as fans grew to see him as a powerhouse midfielder who liked to take the game to the opposition at every possible opportunity.
It’s unclear if Klopp is planning to recruit any more midfielders this summer with The Reds already having Fabinho, Jordan Henderson, Gini Wijnaldum, Naby Keita, James Milner, Adam Lallana, Xherdan Shaqiri and Oxlade-Chamberlain on their books.
It’s unlikely anyone will be coming in unless someone leaves. However, I expect the same midfield roster to be at Anfield come August.
To use that old cliche we hate in football, Oxlade-Chamberlain genuinely will be like a new signing for the club having missed out on all of the 2018/19 campaign.
