Former Liverpool and Scotland defender Steve Nicol has told ESPN that it would be “ideal” for Philippe Coutinho to return to Anfield.

Nicol stated that on the back of a successful 2018/19 season, The Reds “don’t have a huge need [for many new players]”. However, he did say that his transfer “wishlist” would include another centre-back, namely Matthijs De Ligt, and a midfielder like James Maddison who can win the ball back for his team but also “pick a pass and score a goal.”

He went on to say that “you’re always looking for more goalscorers… Somebody like a Coutinho, I think, would be ideal for Liverpool.”

Many Liverpool fans are in two minds about whether they would take the Brazilian international back at the club. The 27-year-old forced his way out of Anfield, sacrificing a large sum of his own money to ensure the deal got done as quickly as possible.

However, we’re a fickle lot, us football fans. Stranger things have happened.
