Liverpool Football Club is reported to have sent some scouts to watch Sardar Azmoun’s goalscoring performance in Zenit St Petersburg’s Russian Super Cup defeat to Lokomotiv Moscow on Saturday night.
As reported in Tuesday’s Daily Express, members of Michael Edwards scouting team were apparently deployed to Russia to watch Azmoun in action. The 24-year-old striker dubbed as the ‘Iranian Messi’ did not disappoint, scoring a goal either side of the half-time break.
The match was played at the VTB Arena in Moscow and Lokomotiv ran out 3-2 winners in the end.
Azmoun previously claimed Liverpool had declared an interest in signing him as far back as 2016.
It’s unclear if Jurgen Klopp and his backroom team will decide to make a move for Azmoun this summer as it has been quite low-key so far in terms of transfers.
However, with news of Xherdan Shaqiri’s tear to his calf muscle, Liverpool will be seriously lacking in depth in the attacking third at the start of the season.
Therefore, Liverpool’s interest in Azmoun could be a lot more serious than we realise.
