Liverpool captain and the club’s current longest-serving player, Jordan Henderson, discusses what it’s like to play in the Merseyside derby.
Henderson joined The Reds from Sunderland in 2011, over 8 years ago, when Kenny Dalglish was the Liverpool manager.
In the 18 derbies in all competitions since Henderson’s arrival, Liverpool have not lost one, winning 9 and drawing 9.
Speaking to Liverpoolfc.com, Henderson gave an insight into just what it means to play in these local derbies.
“It’s a brilliant game to be involved in. It’s a derby, a big derby, so it’s very passionate, very emotional.
“It’s a huge game for both teams and at the same time, we look forward to it and you want to be involved and ready to give everything.
“It comes down to focus and what is important. At the end of the day, it’s another game that we want three points from.
“Of course it’s a derby and we’re going to have to deal with maybe a little bit more media from the outside and a little bit more hype about the game.
“But for us, it’s about business as usual and giving everything and performing to the best of our ability on the night.”
Henderson also spoke about the old cliché that the formbook goes out the window when it comes to derby matches.
“I mean, every team is going to want to come to Anfield and cause an upset and give everything they can to get a result. I’m sure Everton will be very much the same.
“Of course they’re not in the best moment that they’ve been in, but in a derby game anything can happen and I’m sure they’ll be ready to give everything on the night.”
Liverpool and Everton meet at Anfield this Wednesday night with a later-than-usual kick-off slot of 20:15 UK time.
