Liverpool created history on Saturday evening in Qatar, winning the Club World Cup for the first time in the club’s history.
Roberto Firmino, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Virgil van Dijk spoke with FIFA.com after the 1-0 extra-time victory over Brazilian club Flamengo.
An extremely poor refereeing performance left Liverpool battling against the odds as they also dealt with endless time-wasting tactics from Flamengo.
In the first half of extra-time, Firmino put the matter to bed, however. The Brazilian striker finished coolly after some brilliant set-up play from both Jordan Henderson and Sadio Mané.
Firmino told FIFA.com how important the trophy is to the players.
“To be world champions is incredible.
“It’s a unique feeling. Wearing the badge of world champions for the next year will be amazing.”
Local lad, Trent Alexander-Arnold said:
“The Champions Wall is massive at Melwood, so we’re excited to go back and hopefully see it.
“… to be able to do it today is huge for us, putting ourselves in the history books and making sure we’re remembered as a really good Liverpool team. It’s an exciting time to be a Liverpool player.”
Liverpool’s number 4, Virgil van Dijk, recovered from illness in time to take his place at the heart of the defence alongside the excellent Joe Gomez. Van Dijk commented on the pride the team feels having written their own chapter in the club’s history books.
“It’s something that we’ve never had before with Liverpool.
“We’ve written history with this squad and I’m very proud of that. It was very important for us to finish what we came here to do. It was a tough two games but we did it.”
Jurgen Klopp’s Redmen return to Merseyside as World Champions now, continuing their quest for a Premier League title away to Leicester City on Boxing Day.
