Liverpool will not be providing Philippe Coutinho with a route back to Anfield in the next transfer window according to David Maddock.
Coutinho has spent the last six months of his dwindling career on loan at Bundesliga giants FC Bayern. However, Bayern have all but confirmed that they will not be taking up the option to buy Coutinho permanently for €120 million after the loan deal expires.
Maddock wrote in his piece in the Mirror about the possibility of Coutinho ending up with one of Liverpool’s Premier League rivals. It’s believed the Brazil international’s strong preference would be a return to the Merseyside club where he made his name but the possibility of such a return has been ruled out.
Maddock’s article states that ‘Liverpool have made definitively clear there is zero interest in bringing Philippe Coutinho back to Anfield.’
According to Maddock, ‘The Spanish giants [Barcelona] have told the player he will be allowed to leave and emphasised that with a promise his number 7 shirt will be passed on to Antoine Griezmann next season.’
Coutinho joined Barcelona in January 2018, five years after joining Liverpool from Internazionale during Brendan Rodgers’ reign at the club. Maddock states that Coutinho ‘has admitted to friends that he made a big mistake in forcing his way out of the Merseyside club to join Barca.’
It certainly seems like there will be no reunion between Coutinho and Liverpool Football Club. It’s hard to see exactly where the 27-year-old’s career can now go from here.
If he is to recover the scintillating form we know he’s capable of in the future, I hope it’s not with one of our Premier League rivals.
