Liverpool boss Jürgen Klopp is reported to be keen to have a face-to-face meetup with RB Leipzig’s Timo Werner as soon as circumstances allow.
Seen to be part of Klopp’s ‘due process’ when it comes to hiring a new employee, the Liverpool manager wants to have a sit-down chat with Werner before any further progress is made with a contract proposal.
The 24-year-old Germany international scored 21 goals in 25 Bundesliga appearances so far this season while also providing seven assists. Werner also scored four goals and created two in 8 Champions League appearances for RB Leipzig during the current campaign.
Reports in Sport Bild in Germany suggest that Klopp wants the opportunity to get to know Werner a little better before committing to a transfer deal. This makes sense when you consider how big a part every player’s personality and attitude means to Klopp when he’s moulding a team into a unit.
Liverpool are rumoured to be facing stiff competition from Bundesliga giants FC Bayern in their quest to sign Werner. However, speaking in February after RB Leipzig’s win over Spurs in the Champions League, Werner did little to hide his feelings for Liverpool.
“I know that Liverpool is the best team at the moment in the world and when you are linked with that team it makes me very proud.
“It’s a pleasure but I know that Liverpool play a lot of good players and I have to improve myself and I need to learn many more things to get to that level and to play there.”
This transfer story seems likely to go on and on due to the ongoing COVID-19 global pandemic. Maybe someday, when the world returns to ‘normal’, we will get to see Timo Werner in the red of Liverpool.
