Liverpool are reported to be interested in Lille midfielder Boubakary Soumaré according to a French media outlet.
Le10Sport published a story claiming The Reds were all set to compete with rivals Manchester United for the signing of the 21-year-old.
Soumaré is a France U21 international and played a huge role in Lille OSC’s 2019/20 campaign with 20 league appearances. He operates mainly as a central or defensive midfielder and, standing at 6’2″ tall, Soumaré offers a great physical presence in front of Lilles’s defence.
The story goes on to detail how Real Madrid are rumoured to be tracking Soumaré’s progress. The young midfielder is expected to command a fee of around £50 million.
Soumaré advanced through the youth system at Paris Saint Germain before moving to Lille in 2017. He apparently turned down a move to Newcastle United last January, opting to hold out for a bigger club.
Lille OSC currently have a contract with Soumaré which runs until the summer of 2022. However, it’s widely believed they will receive some significant bids for Soumaré in the upcoming transfer window.
When you take a close look at this story, it seems unlikely that Jürgen Klopp would be looking for another defensive midfielder with Fabinho already at the club. Also, Jordan Henderson and Gini Wijnaldum are also competent replacements in the ‘6’ role whenever the Brazilian is injured. Then again, Klopp could be looking to bolster a midfield where players like Henderson and Wijnaldum may now be passing their prime.
