Liverpool midfielder in line for new contract extending until 2024 at least
Contract talks have reportedly begun between Gini Wijnaldum’s representatives and Liverpool as the midfielder enters the final year of his current deal.
Following on from yesterday’s news that Adam Lallana has signed an extension to stay with the club until the current campaign is completed, the potential for a new Wijnaldum deal will please Reds fans everywhere.
Wijnaldum, who will be 30 in November, has been one of Liverpool’s most consistent performers at the club in the Jürgen Klopp era. He has developed a reputation as one of the most press-resistant midfielders in the Premier League, rarely giving the ball away, regardless of the pressure he is under.
The Dutch international’s current contract expires in June 2021 but, as per the story in The Guardian, Liverpool are looking to give him an extension of at least three years, taking it to the summer of 2024.
It’s stated that Wijnaldum is keen to stay at Anfield – where he has called home since being signed by Klopp in 2016.
The Guardian claims that wages will not be an issue in these contract discussions but Wijnaldum is seeking assurances over his future playing time before committing to the new extended deal.
