Liverpool defender Joe Gomez was discussing the intensity of The Reds’ Austrian training camp and how preparations are going for the upcoming Premier League season.
Gomez is part of the first-team squad which has been in Austria for the last couple of weeks. Jürgen Klopp brought his men to what he considers to be the ideal location for pre-season preparations.
Liverpool beat VfB Stuttgart 3-0 in their first friendly of the summer on Saturday thanks to goals from Roberto Firmino, Naby Keïta and Rhian Brewster. They play their second friendly in Austria this afternoon against Red Bull Salzburg. That game kicks off at 15:00 BST.
Speaking to Liverpoolfc.com, Gomez highlighted the commitment and intensity needed during these training camps as Liverpool look to retain their Premier League title.
“It’s good. In different phases and in different things, we’re always competitive and it works well that way.
“You’ve got to train the way you play, I suppose, and that’s something the gaffer emphasises.
“It’s obviously at times been tough and had some tired legs on some days, but it’s part and parcel and you can’t expect anything different in pre-season really.”
Gomez also spoke about the tight-knit unit Klopp has created at the club over the last number of years.
“I think that’s one of the balances in the squad that’s so perfect – we can tell each other and speak our minds when it’s serious and when it’s banter and take it on the chin.
“Just being comfortable with each other and being able to push each other has been essential.
“I think that environment is created by the gaffer, first and foremost, and through the leaders in the team – Millie, Hendo, Virg. All of us have been able to adopt that as well and just being comfortable with each other as well.”
After playing RB Salzburg today, Liverpool will then return back to England before playing Arsenal at Wembley on Saturday evening. That Community Shield clash is the traditional curtain-raiser to the Premier League season, which will begin on September 12th.
