Will this be Liverpool's lineup to face Atalanta tonight in Italy?

Liverpool are in Italy this week to face Serie A high-flyers Atalanta in the Champions League. We’ve had a look at the lineup Jürgen Klopp might go with for this game.

There was good news this week that Joël Matip, Naby Keïta and Kostas Tsimikas all returned to full training and have travelled to Italy with the squad for this game. Thiago Alcântara is still unavailable for selection, however. As are Virgil van Dijk, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Fabinho.

It’s unlikely that Klopp will risk starting Matip with the Manchester City game coming up this Sunday. Expect to see the former Cameroon international play some part in the second half of tonight’s game, maybe.

Rhys Williams is likely to partner Joe Gomez at the heart of The Reds’ back four with Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andy Robertson on each flank. Saturday’s man-of-the-match, Nat Phillips, is not registered as part of Liverpool’s Champions League squad so can’t play any part in the competition’s group stages.

It’s thought that Klopp will probably opt for the 4-2-3-1 formation again, with the two deep-lying midfielders providing some extra cover for Liverpool’s makeshift defence.

Jordan Henderson and Gini Wijnaldum could start as the ‘two’ in midfield with James Milner playing some part in the second half. Klopp is sure to use the five-subs rule to its fullest in Italy tonight.

This means another start for Diogo Jota is likely. He could be on the right of the three supporting attackers, with Roberto Firmino in the centre and Sadio Mané on the left. They will be behind the out-and-out striker, Mohamed Salah.

Predicted Liverpool lineup (4-2-3-1) vs Atalanta: Alisson; Alexander-Arnold, Williams, Gomez, Robertson; Henderson, Wijnaldum; Jota, Firmino, Mané; Salah
