Liverpool will see out their Champions League group with a final fixture in Denmark tonight against FC Midtjylland. What starting eleven will Jürgen Klopp go with?
It’s a rare opportunity for Klopp to rest most of his key players – those that are still currently fit, that is.
Young goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher is likely to continue between the sticks as Alisson Becker continues his rehabilitation. The Brazilian number 1 could be back in time for Liverpool’s trip to Fulham on Sunday. For now, however, 22-year-old Kelleher has another chance to impress and cement his claim to be Liverpool’s back-up goalkeeper, ahead of Adrián.
With Trent Alexander-Arnold and Naby Keïta back in the fold, both players are likely to feature in Denmark to get some more game-time under their belts. I think Neco Williams will start at right-back with Alexander-Arnold replacing him after 60 minutes or so. Fabinho and Rhys Williams is my guess for the centre-back pairing as Matip has that ‘injury-prone’ tag now so is likely to be spared the unnecessary minutes. Kostas Tsimikas could get a rare start at left-back, giving Andy Robertson some rest this week.
The aforementioned Keita will probably start in midfield alongside Curtis Jones. Jordan Henderson may also start but expect him to be replaced at some stage of the second half by Gini Wijnaldum as Klopp manages his players’ workloads.
Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino could all be on the bench with Diogo Jota, Takumi Minamino and Divock Origi starting in attack.
Liverpool are also still without Joe Gomez, Virgil van Dijk, Thiago Alcântara, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, James Milner and Xherdan Shaqiri.
