Should Liverpool Still Be Considered As Challengers For The Champions League This Season?

The Premier League season hasn’t exactly gone to plan for Liverpool this season, as they will relinquish their title to Manchester City before the end of the current campaign. However, while the Reds still have to focus on finishing in the top-four this season, they remain in with a chance of winning the Champions League this season.

Soccer betting made simple sportsbook Betway still currently have the Reds down as one of the leading contenders in the Champions League battle this season. They would have done themselves the world of good in that respective market, having beaten RB Leipzig in the first leg of their Champions League round of 16 tie, but could the Reds go all the way?

Still In With A Chance

Liverpool will certainly not be written off by many experts for the Champions League this season, as they have reached the final in two of the last three seasons. That record should certainly illustrate that despite a blip in league form, the Reds should be taken very seriously on the continent. Jurgen Klopp’s side looked back to somewhere near their best in the first leg against RB Leipzig, as they made a side that is challenging for the Bundesliga title look very average. Much was made in the aftermath of that game about Leipzig’s poor performance, but the Reds still showed in the attacking third that there is reason for optimism.

The front three haven’t been able to reach the heights that they have set over recent seasons in league action, but they remain a forward line that could pose serious questions for defences. Thiago is a player that we could see the best of in Europe, as he demonstrated his talent for dictating the pace of the game throughout Bayern Munich’s Champions League-winning campaign last season. Klopp will also be hopeful of getting players back in time for the later rounds of the competition, which would see Liverpool’s price with Betway continue to drop as the season progresses.

Who Should The Reds Look To Avoid?

As is the case with the Champions League, there will always be teams that sides involved will be looking to avoid until later in the competition. Manchester City, Bayern Munich and PSG are the clear front runners with Betway to win the competition this season, and are realistically the only sides that Liverpool will be looking to avoid at all costs.

There aren’t many other teams left in the Champions League that the Reds would fear. Real Madrid aren’t the same side they were when they beat Klopp’s side in the Champions League final back in 2018, while Juventus are struggling in Italy this season and could be a good tie should they progress past Porto. Fellow Premier League side Chelsea would also be a decent draw for the Reds, as Liverpool have already beaten the Blues once this season. Borussia Dortmund have also struggled in the league, and would be a romantic tie for Klopp. But, Liverpool would be the clear favourites to progress with Betway should they be drawn against the German outfit.
