Who Should Liverpool Keep or Sell? (Part Two)

The upcoming summer transfer window is expected to be a busy one for Liverpool, as they look to overhaul their squad following a disappointing season.

This mini-series of articles will look at which players should stay at Anfield next season and which of the current squad should be moved on.

In the last article, we looked at which goalkeepers and defenders should leave the club but today we will be assessing the future of the midfielders and attackers at Anfield.

Keep:

  • Fabinho
  • Stefan Bajcetic
  • Thiago
  • Jordan Henderson
  • Curtis Jones
  • Harvey Elliott
  • Mohamed Salah
  • Diogo Jota
  • Darwin Nunez
  • Cody Gakpo
  • Luis Diaz

Sell:

  • James Milner (Free)
  • Naby Keita (Free)
  • Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain (Free)
  • Fabio Carvalho (Loan)
  • Roberto Firmino (Free)

James Milner:

The 37-year-old has been a fantastic servant at Liverpool since his move from Manchester City in 2015, but it’s time for both parties to move on.

By letting Milner go, we may be losing a key player in terms of experience but it opens so many doors for the likes of Stefan Bajcetic and potentially Calvin Ramsay to get more game time.

If Leeds United were to survive relegation this season, it wouldn’t surprise me if Milner ends up back at Elland Road next season.

Naby Keita:

Naby Keita has become one of the most frustrating Liverpool players of recent memory as of late, largely due to his absolutely dreadful injury record on Merseyside.

Frustratingly, Liverpool could’ve received a decent transfer fee for the Guinea captain if they had sold him last summer rather than letting him run his contract down.

There is definitely quality there with Keita, but he doesn’t find it anywhere near enough to warrant being a key player for Liverpool.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain:

Another talented player that has suffered hugely from injuries is Oxlade-Chamberlain, who was originally one of Liverpool’s major creative forces after his move from Arsenal in 2017.

Since 2018, injuries have kept him out of any sort of consistency in Klopp’s setup and his time at Anfield is finally set to come to an end.

Having always been strongly liked by the Anfield faithful, it’s sad to have it end in this way but it’s definitely for the best.

Fabio Carvalho:

Fabrizio Romano has revealed that Fabio Carvalho will definitely secure a loan move in the summer, with a return to Fulham heavily tipped to happen.

Carvalho made a promising start to his Liverpool career with goals against Bournemouth and Newcastle United, but since the arrival of Cody Gakpo and the return to fitness of Curtis Jones, his game time has severely shrunk.

I definitely think the Portuguese youngster will become a special player, in a similar way to Philippe Coutinho but a loan move might be for the best next season.

Roberto Firmino:

The Brazilian has already made clear his plans to leave Liverpool at the end of the season, despite having a brilliant season for the Reds.

Firmino has scored 11 goals and got 5 assists so far this season despite missing three months of the season due to injury and would be a perfect backup option behind the rise of Cody Gakpo.

Unfortunately, the decision will be taken out of the club’s hands and a free transfer move to Napoli is currently the favourite outcome.
