Liverpool’s Interest in Goretzka

Liverpool are reportedly interested in making a move for Bayern Munich midfielder Leon Goretzka this summer, as exclusively revealed by Football Transfers.

Reds boss Jurgen Klopp reportedly sees the 28-year-old as his ‘prime’ transfer target, should one of his current midfielders in Fabinho leave the club in a £40million move to Saudi Arabia.

The report also claims that the Bundesliga champions would be willing to sell Goretzka if a bid of around £40million was to be put on the table for the German, with Bayern looking to have a squad rebuild of their own.

Liverpool previously made a move for Goretzka back in 2018, but the German opted to move to remain in Germany instead.

Goretzka’s Admiration for Liverpool

However, at the time Goretzka did reveal:

“They’re a great club, and their development since Klopp’s arrival has been amazing.”

The 28-year-old has been one of the best midfielders in the world since his move to Bayern Munich in 2018, winning five league titles and one UEFA Champions League since then.

Throughout plenty of transfer business, Goretzka has remained a regular in terms of game time for the German side where he has made 179 appearances across five years at the club. Goretzka has also made 53 caps for the German National Team, scoring 14 goals in the process. The Bayern midfielder also has a few specific traits that are always hugely admired by Jurgen Klopp, which is versatility and hard-work.

Goretzka would also fill the much-needed space for an experienced player within Klopp’s squad with Thiago, Fabinho and Jordan Henderson all linked with following James Milner and Roberto Firmino in moves away from the club. On the surface, this deal looks like a no-brainer but Goretzka’s injury record could be a possible reason to look at other options.

However, on the other side of things is the argument that you are guaranteed to be getting a world-class footballer for a cut price of just £40 million in a market that has seen Declan Rice sign for Arsenal for £105 million.

Below are some of his key statistics per 90 minutes, which will give you a glimpse of what to expect from the German:

If Liverpool were to find a way to make sure that Goretzka’s injury problems don’t occur at the same rate as usual, then this move would be an absolute no-brainer for the Reds.
