Carragher Slams Liverpool's Transfer Tactics: Lavia Saga Continues
Liverpool’s Pursuit of Lavia: Carragher’s Take
In the ever-evolving world of football transfers, Liverpool’s chase for Southampton’s Romeo Lavia has taken centre stage. The Reds’ pursuit of the 19-year-old Belgian international has been met with a firm stance from the Saints, who remain unyielding in their £50m valuation.
The Bid That Fell Short
Liverpool, the Premier League champions of 2019/20, recently tabled a £45m offer for Lavia. However, Southampton promptly turned it down on Monday, August 7. This marks the third unsuccessful bid from the Merseyside giants.
Carragher’s Discontent
Jamie Carragher, a Liverpool stalwart with over 700 appearances for the club, didn’t mince his words regarding the ongoing saga. The former England international expressed his dismay on Twitter, stating, “This is embarrassing. Liverpool for years now have got deals done quickly with no fuss. If you don’t think he’s [Lavia] worth 50m, move on; if you really want him, pay it.”

Also not sure why LFC aren’t in for Caicedo, yes it’s a lot of money but Liverpool got big money for JH/FAB 🤷♂️ https://t.co/nNP05udQP8— Jamie Carragher (@Carra23) August 7, 2023
Carragher further questioned Liverpool’s transfer strategy, hinting at the club’s lack of interest in Moises Caicedo, despite having secured significant funds from the sales of Jordan Henderson and Fabinho. The duo recently made their move to Saudi Pro League clubs, fetching a combined £52m.
Midfield Revamp: The Clock is Ticking
With the transfer window rapidly closing, Liverpool’s midfield remains a concern. The club has welcomed Alexis Mac Allister from Brighton and Dominik Szoboszlai from RB Leipzig, costing them £35m and £60m respectively. However, the void left by Henderson and Fabinho’s departure is palpable.
Rumours are rife about potential midfield reinforcements. Names like Crystal Palace’s Cheick Doucoure, Bayern Munich’s Ryan Gravenberch, and Manchester City’s Kalvin Phillips have been floating around, but nothing concrete has materialised.
Lavia’s Current Status
It’s worth noting that Lavia didn’t feature in Southampton’s opening Championship fixture, remaining an unused substitute. Whether this hints at a potential move or is merely a tactical decision remains to be seen.
