Report: Rennes Target Liverpool Defender - Theate Links Hot Up
Joel Matip: Rennes Interested in Liverpool Defender
Liverpool are reportedly being targeted by Ligue 1 side Rennes for the signature of Joel Matip.
The Cameroonian defender is out of contract at Anfield in the summer of 2024 and has been linked with a move away from the club in recent months.
Matip has fallen down the pecking order at Liverpool since the arrival of Ibrahima Konate, and he is now behind Virgil van Dijk and Konate, leaving him to compete with Joe Gomez in Klopp’s pecking order.
L’Equipe are reporting that Rennes are interested in signing Matip and could make a move for him in the January transfer window.
The French club are looking to strengthen their defence and Matip would be a good option for them. He is a talented defender who has experience of playing at the highest level.

However, it is not clear whether Liverpool would be willing to sell Matip. They are already thin in defence and losing him would leave them with just three senior centre-backs.
It is also possible that Matip could sign a new contract at Anfield. He is said to be happy at the club and he could be persuaded to stay if he is offered a regular starting spot.
The next few months will be interesting to see what happens with Matip. He is a valuable asset to Liverpool, but it is clear that he needs to play more regularly if he is to stay at the club.
