Liverpool’s Midfield Overhaul: Souness Gives His Verdict

In the ever-evolving world of football, Liverpool’s recent transfer activity has been the talk of the town. The Merseyside club, known for its rich history and passionate fan base, has seen a significant reshuffling in its midfield. And who better to weigh in on these changes than Liverpool legend, Graeme Souness?

Anfield’s New Arrivals: Mac Allister and Szoboszlai

Earlier this summer, Liverpool welcomed Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai to their ranks. Both players have made a notable impact since their arrival, catching the eye of fans and pundits alike. Their addition was soon followed by Wataru Endo and Ryan Gravenberch, as Jurgen Klopp sought to redefine his midfield dynamics.

The Midfield Exodus

The need for reinforcements became evident after the departure of five senior midfielders. Naby Keita, James Milner, and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain bid their farewells, and in a surprising twist, Jordan Henderson and Fabinho made their way to the Saudi Pro League.

Souness Weighs In

Speaking to the Mirror, Souness shared his insights: “I have a high regard for Szoboszlai and Mac Allister. As for Endo, time will tell. A commendable stint in the Bundesliga doesn’t guarantee Premier League success. The Premier League’s intensity is unparalleled. It’ll be interesting to see how he adapts.”

He continued, “Liverpool’s recent £100m bid for Caicedo indicates Klopp’s intent to bolster the midfield. Liverpool’s current squad boasts ample goal-scoring prowess, a solid defence, and a reliable goalkeeper. However, the midfield blend seems amiss. I’d suggest another central defender, given Matip’s fitness concerns, and perhaps another central midfielder. Considering the amount spent on Endo, he might be more of a squad addition.”

Reflecting on past decisions, Souness remarked, “The optimal time to reinforce is when you’re leading. Last summer, I opined that Liverpool’s midfield needed bolstering. Subsequently, they acquired Arthur Melo, who barely featured. Given the age profile, the outcome was predictable. Now, with the inclusion of Mac Allister and Szoboszlai, Liverpool seems poised for success. Yet, a top-tier holding midfielder would be the cherry on top.”
