Who Should be Liverpool’s September Player of the Month?
Liverpool had a largely successful run in September, with numerous players proving to be standout performers for the Reds.
Jurgen Klopp’s side picked up five wins against Aston Villa, Wolves, LASK, West Ham United and Leicester City before falling to a controversial defeat at Tottenham Hotspur.
It has been goals galore for the Reds, who have scored 16 goals in six games in September across all competitions.
In this article, we’re going to take a look at three contenders for Liverpool’s September Player of the Month and look deeper into their individual statistics across the month.
Mohamed Salah
The Egyptian King has been on top form in front of goal for Liverpool across September, with huge numbers of both goals and assists.
Salah notched three goals and two assists in total for the Reds in September and was extremely unlucky to not have more contributions.
In the opening game of the month, Salah scored the third goal in Liverpool’s 3-0 victory over Aston Villa at Anfield.
He would then go on to notch a brace of assists for both Gakpo and Robertson’s goals in Liverpool’s 3-1 away victory over Wolves.
The 31-year-old was unlucky not to get a hat-trick of assists when the third goal was registered as an own goal, rather than Harvey Elliott’s.
Salah then scored in a substitute appearance against LASK, before scoring once again in the 3-1 victory over West Ham United.
The winger then didn’t feature in Liverpool’s victory over Leicester City in the Carabao Cup before having a perfectly legitimate assist for a Luis Diaz goal disallowed by VAR.
Dominik Szoboszlai:
The next contender for Player of the Month is the winner of the August award, Dominik Szobozslai.
The 22-year-old has become an absolute superstar for the Reds since his £60million summer move from RB Leipzig.
He has been ever-present in Jurgen Klopp’s midfield, featuring in all six games throughout September.
Szobozslai grabbed his first goal for Liverpool with a stunning volley against Aston Villa in the opening game of the month.
The Hungarian would then put in a solid display as a holding midfielder in the victory over Wolves, before featuring as a substitute in Liverpool’s victory at LASK and a dominant display against West Ham United.
An absolute wonder goal from the bench from Szobozslai would prove to be the winner in the 3-1 victory against Leicester City in the Carabao Cup Third Round.
Finally, Szobozslai would put in a tireless display as one of the nine remaining players in the defeat to Tottenham Hotspur at the end of the month.
The youngster has already made himself pretty much impossible to drop from Klopp’s midfield three, proving his worth both defensively and offensively.
I suspect that Szobozslai may be the favourite to win the Player of the Month award for the second month on the bounce.
Darwin Nunez:
Although Nunez has suffered from a few minor issues throughout the month, I think his performances have straight out of the top drawer every time he has played.
The forward finished the month with two goals and two assists from the six games, proving to be much more clinical in front of goal.
The 24-year-old got off to a flying start in September, with two direct goal involvements against Aston Villa.
First of all, he forced Matty Cash into turning the ball into his own goal after his shot crashed off the post before then assisting Mohamed Salah’s goal in the second half.
Nunez was then one of the second half substitutes that set Liverpool on their way to three points at Wolves, with his fantastic link-up and hold-up play.
Against LASK, the Uruguayan scored and notched an assist in the 3-1 victory in the Europa League before scoring the winner in the win over West Ham United in the Premier League.
Unfortunately, minor issues meant that Nunez got barely any game time in the games against Leicester City and Tottenham Hotspur at the end of the month.
Either way, it’s been fantastic to watch the growth of Nunez over the past few months and he’s definitely continued that throughout the month of September.
Not only has he become much more clinical in front of goal, but his overall link-up play especially with Mohamed Salah has become a joy to watch.
Who gets my vote?
My September Player of the Month is Dominik Szobozslai.
After already winning the award in August, I think the Hungarian has took his performances to a whole new level but has also been hugely consistent.
The fact that has featured in every single game throughout September and has contributed signifcantly in every one, swayed me towards him.
It’s also hard to ignore the two absolute wonder goals that the Hungarian scored last month, with the name of Steven Gerrard being mentioned in comparison.
However, it’s still hugely important to note just how impressive both Mohamed Salah and Darwin Nunez have been throughout September.
Other names worthy of a mention include the likes of Alisson, Andy Robertson and Cody Gakpo who have all contributed well.
