After hard fought wins against Sheffield United and Crystal Palace, Liverpool currently enjoy a slender one-point lead at the top of the table.
Despite hitting the top, the games continue to come thick and fast with the Reds about to embark on a run of fixtures that could well define their season.
So could Liverpool really win the title? The next few weeks will reveal all, but certain things will need to go their way if they are to maintain their title push.
Navigating a busy festive periodÂ
With the daunting prospect of playing seven games in a little over three weeks, Christmas can often be what makes or breaks any Premier League team’s season.
If Liverpool are truly going to contend for the title they will need to come through this tricky period unscathed and have their entire squad fit and firing.
Games against Royale Union SG and their Caraboa Cup quarterfinal against West Ham should see plenty of rotation, but Jurgen Klopp will need to have his star men fit and fresh for mouthwatering and potentally title defining contests against Manchester United and Arsenal.
In what is turning into a hugely topsy-turvy season, Liverpool will need their entire squad to perform if they are to maintain their position at the top of the table.
Take advantage of other’s dropping points – notably Manchester City
Before a ball had been kicked this season there wasn’t a pundit in the land who didn’t believe that Manchester City weren’t nailed on to win a fourth successive Premier League title. With Bet365 becoming legal in several US states, backing City for even more league glory just seemed a no brainer. However, this season, things just haven’t gone to plan for last year’s treble winners.
At the time of writing, Liverpool hold a four point lead over their Mancunian rivals and will hope to push that lead out even further over the next few weeks. With City having Club World Cup commitments, the Reds have an opportunity to put some real distance between themselves and the reigning Premier League champions.
With title rivals Arsenal and Aston Villa also having some tricky matches over the festive period, Liverpool will hope to capitalise on any points that their rivals may end up dropping.
Maintain defensive solidityÂ
Through the first portion of the season, Liverpool have proved to be exceptionally difficult to beat, with the Red’s one and only league defeat coming away at Tottenham in unbelievably controversial fashion.
Alongside Arsenal, Liverpool have the best defensive record in the Premier League and have just conceded four goals in their last five games.
With both Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander Arnold looking back to their imperious best, Liverpool’s new found solidity allows their forward players to do what they do best – score goals and win games.
Only City have scored more goals than the Reds this season and if they can keep this formula up, Liverpool will take some serious stopping.
