Liverpool 4 – 2 Newcastle Premier League Man of the Match
Luis Díaz
As the year new began, the Premier League delivered one of the biggest contests of the season, with the most entertaining match of the 2023/24 campaign being played at out at a bouncing Anfield. The opening half was a frenzy of energy and missed chances by Liverpool, as the home side drove and penetrated through the Newcastle back like at will. Within this overwhelming period of play, tonight’s man of the match was electric and largely unplayable from the opening bell. Every time the former Porto man picked up the ball in that opening half, he would look to engage a faltering marker, with a continual twisting motion from inside to out, that eventually created the disallowed goal and the awarded penalty (which was saved from Mohamed Salah).
🇨🇴 Luis Díaz completed 5 dribbles tonight.
That’s the most dribbles he has completed in a singe match in the Premier League this season.

The tenacious endeavour by the 26-year-old did not relent in the second half, as the unpredictable and infectious element of his game finally re-emerged, after being misplaced for so long. After such a torrid period where a level of family tragedy engulfed the young man’s personal life, this 64-minute period on the Anfield turf seemed like a reawakening of wizardry. Eventually, the opening goal was scored by Mohamed Salah, as his close-range tap in started the Egyptian Kings own rise towards a brilliant second half display. It was the on-pitch interaction between the forward line and the unstoppable run by Luis Díaz, which provided the opening pass for Darwin to assist. A simple square ball by the Uruguayan striker was a relief to all, however, most of the praise much be levelled at the Liverpool number 7, who was as direct and brilliant as we have seen this year.
In order to manage the playing loads and intensity of the game, the reds fanbase was sadly unable to see this games most electric element finish the match. The conditions and equalising goal meant changes were probably needed, though it was still surprising to see the Colombian withdrawn so early and with the result very much in the balance.
A fabulous final period of this match erupted soon thereafter, as Mohamed Salah took the game to a beleaguered Newcastle rearguard, with some notable assistance by the second half substitute, Diogo Jota. As the Egyptian King departs for the 2024 African Cup of Nations, his second half showing proved how much Jürgen Klopp and his teammates rely upon their record-breaking scorer. Answers will need to be found to cover the loss of the talisman, yet the performance of man may help deliver some of that relief.
Liverpool wanted to extend their lead at the top of the Premier League, which they managed to do with a pulsating 4-2 win. Luis Díaz was superb and unmatched with his period on the pitch, as the reds march on.
Arsenal await next Sunday, in the FA Cup 3rd round tie at the Emirates.
