Liverpool considering move for Crystal Palace Defender
Liverpool are reportedly interested in a summer move for Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi. With a long-term injury to Joel Matip, Jurgen Klopp is expected to bolster his defensive options at the end of the season.
The Reds have previously been linked with a move for Guehi in the summer of 2023, but midfielders were ultimately the priority at that time. But Liverpool are set to reignite their interest in the 23-year-old, according to reports from David Anderson of the Daily Mirror.
With Guehi currently only having two years left on his current contract at Crystal Palace, several of Europe’s top clubs could target the centre-back.
Marc Guehi: A Familiar Foe
Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool side have had numerous close battles with Crystal Palace over recent years. Guehi has undoubtedly been at the heart of some of those struggles, forming a quite remarkable partnership alongside Joachim Andersen at the heart of the back line.
Many will remember Guehi’s solid performance in the 0-0 draw at Selhurst Park last February, adding a touch of class to Palace’s usually stubborn defence. That touch of class has seen him become an England international over recent months, remaining a potential shout for the upcoming Euro 2024 England squad with Gareth Southgate clearly a big fan.
The Tactical Fit Under Klopp
The 23-year-old just seems an absolutely perfect fit for what Klopp wants to achieve with his defenders. That includes an abundance of raw pace and strength, but also the footballing intelligence and ability that can elevate their game to a world-class level.
This signing would remind me an awful lot of the signing of Ibou Konate back in 2021, who has now become one of the most dominant defenders in European football. There’s a chance that we would see the two partner each other quite regularly if a deal were to be made, which is an exciting thought in itself.
Guehi fits the bill for a lot of the desired traits in Liverpool’s search for a defender, with the fact that he is left-footed being right at the top of that list. When you look at the Reds’ recent rumoured transfer targets, you will notice how big of a deal that is.
It seems that Klopp could be looking ahead to a potential long-term replacement for Virgil Van Dijk or Andy Robertson if there was a shift in tactical shape. With the likes of Goncalo Inacio and Piero Hincapie continuously linked with a move to Anfield, it’s hard to deny that there’s some truth behind that.
Marc Guehi: Yes or No?
It’s hard to deny that Guehi carries a lot of ability and Premier League experience, which would make him a very exciting proposition to Liverpool. If the price is right, then Guehi would be a brilliant piece of business for the Reds.
If based on Transfermarkt valuation of £38million, then this would be an absolute bargain for such a talented player. There’s also an incredibly high ceiling in terms of potential, which could provide steady hands to carry the torch after Van Dijk’s departure.
