Without getting too drawn on what could and should have been, it remains important to note just how superb of a display the man of the match enjoyed against the likes of Kevin De Bruyne, Rodri, Bernardo Silva, and the second-half substitute. Mateo Kovačić, the 23-cap Argentina playmaker, was dominant and resilient against such a renowned stable of elite operators. The Reds’ good moments seemed to flow through the robust middleman, who orchestrated a fight back and a second half of dominance. Alongside his Japan international captain, Wataru Endō, a continual sense of confidence flowed in and around the imposing double pivot. It is no coincidence that the performances of the £35m summer signing have exploded since he was drafted into his preferred position, allowing him to move through the midfield area with purpose and more freedom. The second penalty in a week was calmly dispatched (early in the second half) and set his side on their way to an assumed and deserved victory, which was only let down by some erratic finishing.
Supporting Cast: Defence and Missed Chances
Notably, the central defensive displays of both Jarell Quansah and Virgil van Dijk were of the highest order, which enabled a bedrock and dependability from which Liverpool could grow. The energy of the fullbacks was solid. However, despite so many moments to make a scoring contribution, the forward line and attacking assets were guilty of too much indecision, and it may well prove costly at the close of the season.

This game represented the meeting of the Premier League’s two best footballing sides and managers, who will surely end the season fighting one another for that sensational top spot. If Jürgen Klopp is to attain a second English League crown, a handful of Anfield assets will need to be playing at an elite level from now until the final whistle on game week 38.
