Summer Transfer Speculations

I have officially run out of all remaining August Monday’s, by which to claim that this will be when Liverpool finally makes their long-awaited summer signings. As the 2024 summer transfer window slowly draws to a close, the Anfield fanbase remains a hotbed of frustration and frenzied speculation, of which much surrounds the supposed inaction of the red’s Sporting CEO, Michael Edwards, as well as his Sporting Director, Richard Hughes. There have been no official announcements and the deafening silence seems to indicate that any business is being carried out behind closed doors.

Or so we hope.

Of course, there is the safe guarding addition of the world’s best young goalkeeper, Giorgi Mamardashvili, who will be signed and loaned back to his current club, Valencia. This type of arrangement is a tremendous piece of long-term business, yet it still does not guarantee future success, nor does it improve the current landscape. A defensive midfielder is still required, with the need for other positions being considered also. The likes of Alessandro Bastoni, Alan Varela, Piero Hincapié, Rayan Aït-Nouri, Manu Koné, Anthony Gordon, and Eberechi Eze, are all names that continue to float through the Liverpool gossip pages, without any hint of a concrete move.

Why Would the Final Week Be Chosen for Incomings…?

I wrote an article this past weekend, commenting on how structural changes and appointments had been undertaken by the new CEO, to establish a new hierarchy within the historical football club. The new Head Coach (and his entirely new staff) has been installed, whereas the medical and analytical departments also demanded fresh appointments. Given that Arne Slot may have demanded the entire pre-season to assess his new playing squad, it created an unavoidable delay due to the various international tournaments that kept so many players away. All of this may seem like a weak defence of the process; however, no one can deny that an ambitious bid nearly succeeded in attempting to attract the services of the Spanish superstar, Martín Zubimendi, just two weeks ago. It appears that that prospective capture was one which was brought forward due to its difficulty in achieving. The inevitable failure to land such a loyal Real Sociedad midfielder, surely represented the moment to realign the recruitment process and plan for a final flurry.

Following the about turn by the Spanish holding midfielder, Zubimendi, there was no need to rush through deals for either the away win against Ipswich, nor the most recent 2-0 win (at Anfield) over Brentford. There was evidently an intention to move on fringe assets in the middle to end of August, leading to the sales of Fábio Carvalho, Sepp van den Berg, and Bobby Clark. The likes of Tyler Morton and Ben Doak may be sold in the closing days of the window, whereas the loan opportunities for Stefan Bajčetić and other talented youngsters is still a reality. There is also a chance of more established players leaving this month, as both Joe Gomez and Caoimhin Kelleher look for more regular starting berths. Ultimately, despite the shortening window to make alterations, various end of window deals can be struck and that appears to have been the consensus from the outset.

Was There a Chance That The Reds Sign No One…?

With every passing hour, there is of course an ever-increasing possibility that no new players arrive at the Axa Training Centre. The Merseyside club has a fanbase that is revelling in the positive on pitch exploits, though are agonising over the lack of any immediate additions. I cannot imagine that the new leadership group would want to risk the wrath from corners of the support, therefore, I remain unwavering in my confidence that new signings beyond Chiesa & Mamardashvili will eventually avail themselves.
