Grizz Khan on Kerkez, Jorrel Hato, and Arne Slot’s Vision for Liverpool

Liverpool’s ongoing evolution under Arne Slot has sparked discussions about potential summer signings, with left-back recruitment emerging as a key talking point. On The Daily Red podcast from Anfield Index, Dave Davis and Grizz Khan debated the likelihood of Milos Kerkez joining Liverpool, with Grizz offering a firm stance: “I don’t think he will be a target for us come summer.” Instead, he believes Liverpool have their sights set elsewhere, specifically on Dutch defender Jorrel Hato.

Why Grizz Khan Thinks Kerkez Won’t Play for Liverpool

The idea of Liverpool pursuing Milos Kerkez has been floated in recent weeks, but Grizz Khan remains unconvinced. “I just have a feeling, just a feeling, that he’s not a Slot-type player,” he stated. While acknowledging the Hungarian full-back’s energy and attacking output, he questioned whether Kerkez fits the mould of a left-back Arne Slot would prioritise.

“He’s very gung-ho, very energetic, plays with a lot of emotion,” Grizz explained. “I just think neither full-back role in Slot’s system quite suits that profile.” Liverpool’s interest in full-backs is often tied to tactical fluidity and technical ability rather than raw aggression, and for Grizz, Kerkez may not align with Slot’s preferred approach.

While some fans have latched onto reports linking Liverpool with the Bournemouth defender, Grizz dismissed the speculation. “He obviously is on a list, and has been quoted by reputable journalists as one that we’re looking at, or looked at, but I just don’t think it’s going to happen.”

Why Jorrel Hato Fits the Liverpool Model

If Kerkez is not the answer, then who is? Grizz believes Liverpool have their eyes firmly set on Ajax’s highly-rated defender Jorrel Hato. “I think we’ve got our eyes on a certain Dutchman to be that player,” he said, suggesting that Liverpool’s recruitment team are prioritising Hato’s versatility and composure.

At just 18 years old, Hato has already established himself as a key player for Ajax, featuring in both central defence and at left-back. His ability to transition between positions makes him an attractive option for a Liverpool side that values tactical flexibility. “He’s a kid, really, but the profile of him is more suited to what Slot wants,” Grizz noted.

The Dutch influence under Slot is likely to grow, with Liverpool already linked to players from the Eredivisie. Grizz highlighted this trend: “Since Slot has come in, I think he prefers the more technical, calm, composed type of player.” That description aligns perfectly with Hato, who is regarded as one of the most composed young defenders in European football.

Slot’s Tactical Influence on Recruitment

Arne Slot’s arrival at Liverpool marks a shift in tactical emphasis. While Jurgen Klopp’s full-backs, particularly Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andy Robertson, thrived in an aggressive, high-energy system, Slot’s approach requires defenders who can maintain balance and positional awareness.

Grizz pointed out the subtle but significant changes already visible: “I think Slot is looking for full-backs who can tuck in when needed, who don’t just bomb forward at every opportunity.” This is where Hato’s profile becomes even more appealing. His ability to hold his defensive shape, build from the back, and step into midfield when required makes him an ideal candidate for the left-sided role.

As Grizz summarised, “It just comes down to the style of play. Some players are brilliant, but they don’t fit what a manager wants.” Kerkez, while an excellent attacking left-back, may not be what Slot is looking for. Hato, on the other hand, appears to tick all the right boxes.

What Liverpool’s Defensive Plans Mean for the Squad

If Liverpool do make a move for Hato, it raises questions about the future of their current full-back options. Andy Robertson, now 30, has struggled with injuries in recent seasons, while Kostas Tsimikas has been a capable deputy but not a long-term solution.

Grizz also touched on potential outgoings, hinting that Liverpool may need to reshape their defensive depth: “There’s still a chance we see some movement in the summer. A couple of exits, a couple of incomings.” The arrival of a younger, tactically adaptable player like Hato would fit seamlessly into Slot’s long-term project.

For now, speculation will continue, but Grizz was clear in his assessment—Kerkez is unlikely to wear a Liverpool shirt, while Hato could be the next young talent to step into Anfield’s defensive ranks.
