Florian Wirtz to Undergo Medical Before Finalising Liverpool Transfer
Record-breaking agreement moves closer to completion
Florian Wirtz is expected to take a significant step towards finalising his move from Bayer Leverkusen to Liverpool this Friday, when he is scheduled to undergo a medical in the UK, according to David Ornstein in the Athletic. The 22-year-old German international is on the verge of becoming the Reds’ marquee summer signing in what would represent a landmark deal for both clubs.
As reported on 13 June, Liverpool have agreed to pay €136.3 million (£116m) for the highly-rated attacking midfielder. The fee consists of an upfront payment of €117.5 million (£100m), with an additional €18.8 million in performance-based add-ons. This transaction, should all clauses be met, would eclipse Liverpool’s previous record and become the most expensive British transfer of all time.
Long-term contract lined up at Anfield
Pending a successful medical, Wirtz will sign a five-year deal at Anfield. His arrival is seen as a major statement of intent by the Premier League champions, who traditionally have not splashed out on proven stars in their prime. But Wirtz, a player described internally as transformative, was viewed as worth the outlay.
Leverkusen had originally sought €150 million for their prized asset, but Liverpool were unwilling to meet that valuation. The final compromise signals strong negotiation from both sides, with Leverkusen accepting slightly below their asking price and Liverpool agreeing to stretch their structure for a player of Wirtz’s calibre.
Bayern miss out as Wirtz picks Anfield
Wirtz was also of firm interest to Bayern Munich, yet it’s understood that the Bundesliga giants were informed as early as May that the player’s preference was a move to Merseyside, should he depart this summer.
The midfielder’s contract with Leverkusen was due to run until 2027, offering the club significant leverage in negotiations. Yet Wirtz’s desire to work under Liverpool’s new leadership structure, combined with his admiration for the club’s recent success, played a crucial role in shaping the deal.
Stellar performances make Wirtz a worthy investment
In the 2024-25 campaign, Wirtz featured in 45 matches across all competitions, netting 16 goals and providing 15 assists. Leverkusen finished second in the Bundesliga and reached the Champions League round of 16.
Those numbers followed a historic 2023-24 season, where Wirtz was instrumental in guiding Leverkusen to their first-ever Bundesliga title with an unbeaten domestic run. That campaign also included a Europa League final appearance and saw Wirtz register 18 goals and 20 assists in 49 games. His performances earned him the Bundesliga Player of the Season award, reinforcing his status as one of Europe’s brightest young talents.
Strategic rebuild under way at Leverkusen
Wirtz’s imminent departure follows that of full-back Jeremie Frimpong, whose €35 million (£29.6m) release clause was activated by Liverpool earlier this summer. His signing was announced on 30 May, following the high-profile exit of Trent Alexander-Arnold to Real Madrid.
Liverpool’s continued engagement with Leverkusen over recent weeks has also coincided with major changes at the German club. Head coach Xabi Alonso has taken over at Real Madrid, replacing Carlo Ancelotti. Former Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has been appointed to lead Leverkusen through the next phase of their development.
As Liverpool prepare to welcome one of Europe’s most coveted talents, the coming days are expected to formalise what has already been agreed in principle — a deal that could define their next era.
