Alexander Isak to Liverpool? Fabrizio Romano Plays Down Transfer Buzz

Isak links spark fan excitement

Reports earlier this week lit up the Liverpool transfer rumour mill as Newcastle United striker Alexander Isak was seemingly the next big target for the Reds. The 25-year-old Swede, who has impressed in the Premier League, is reportedly valued at a staggering £150 million — a fee that would smash Liverpool’s transfer record.

The story gained traction as journalists like Ben Jacobs claimed the Reds “are prepared to test the Tynesiders’ resolve”, while Luke Edwards of the Telegraph suggested Newcastle are “braced for” attempts to prise him away.

Fabrizio Romano pours cold water on talk

However, trusted transfer guru Fabrizio Romano has offered a more sobering take on the situation. Speaking on GIVEMESPORT’s Market Madness podcast, Romano commented:

“Liverpool would try to go for Isak [if he became available] but at the moment I don’t have this feeling. The club too, from what I’m hearing, see it as a very, very difficult deal.”

Romano’s remarks underline the challenge of pulling off a deal of this magnitude. With Isak’s contract running until 2028 and Newcastle in no need to sell, any move would require a significant shift in circumstances — either a massive offer or a player-led push for an exit.

Could Liverpool still make a move?

Despite Romano’s caution, Liverpool could yet lodge a bid to test the waters. A formal offer might not be enough to tempt Newcastle, but it would at least show serious interest and signal ambition. As Romano noted, unless something dramatic happens, it’s “a very, very difficult deal” — but one that isn’t entirely off the table.

There’s also the financial balancing act. With Liverpool already confirming the club-record signing of Florian Wirtz, another big-money deal would likely require sales or creative structuring. Still, for a player of Isak’s profile — clinical, mobile, and Premier League-proven — many would argue he’s worth the stretch.

Hugo Ekitike: the budget-friendly alternative?

Romano also named Hugo Ekitike of Eintracht Frankfurt as a more realistic target for Liverpool. The French forward would be significantly cheaper and could fit into the club’s long-term squad planning.

“Admittedly it’d take something extraordinary from Liverpool to convince Newcastle to part with their main striker,” He concluded, “but there’s far more to be gained than to be lost from lodging a formal bid.”

It’s a calculated gamble — but one that could electrify the fanbase and mark the Arne Slot era.

Our View – Anfield Index Analysis

From a Liverpool supporter’s perspective, the Isak rumour is tantalising, but not without its complications. For £150 million, we’d be entering uncharted waters — and it’s hard to see FSG approving that fee after the Wirtz deal.

That said, Isak fits the mould: tall, technically sharp, and with a Premier League track record. He could genuinely lead the line at Anfield, especially if Darwin Núñez leaves. But with Newcastle’s strong financial backing and no pressure to sell, we’d be reliant on Isak pushing for a move — something there’s currently no sign of.

If we’re serious about contending on all fronts next season, going big might be necessary. Yet Romano’s take feels grounded. His mention of Hugo Ekitike isn’t headline-grabbing, but the club’s model under FSG has often favoured potential over proven stardom.

Isak would be a statement signing, no doubt. But unless there’s a twist, this story feels more like summer wishful thinking than a likely blockbuster.
