Conor Bradley Concerns Highlight Wider Issues for Liverpool’s Squad Depth
As Liverpool prepare to defend their Premier League crown under Arne Slot, cracks in the squad depth are beginning to surface. While optimism surrounds the club following last season’s title triumph, there are serious concerns that need addressing before the transfer window closes in three weeks. One of the most pressing issues is the fitness of Conor Bradley, who was expected to play a far more senior role this season following Trent Alexander-Arnold’s departure.
Lewis Steele, speaking to Dave Davis for Anfield Index, did not hold back in his assessment: “I think the concern about Bradley is that it’s another injury on top of a few niggly injuries last season.” He added, “They’re never long-term injuries, they’re all 3 or 4 weeks but it is still a worry.”
Slot’s Second Season Needs Stability
Slot’s debut season brought a long-awaited title back to Merseyside, but there’s no room for complacency. Stability and depth are key, especially with European and domestic commitments piling pressure on the squad. With Diogo Jota’s tragic passing still casting a shadow, the emotional resilience of the group will also be tested.
The right-back position was always going to be under scrutiny this season. Trent’s exit left a significant void and although Jeremie Frimpong’s arrival helps ease that burden, Bradley was seen as a key piece in Slot’s system. Steele summed up the concern neatly: “It’s a worry because Trent has obviously gone, so Bradley was going to have a more senior role this season even though Frimpong has come in.”
Injuries and Inexperience: A Risky Mix
There’s a growing sense that Liverpool’s back line is vulnerable. Steele also flagged another crucial issue: “Starting the season injured is not a good way to start. I’ve got a lot of worries about the centre-back department too and whether Joe Gomez can stay fit all season.” With Virgil van Dijk not getting any younger and Ibrahima Konaté’s own patchy injury record, relying heavily on Gomez carries risk.
Addressing Gaps Before Time Runs Out
The closing stages of the transfer window could be vital. Depth issues in key areas, particularly at centre-back and full-back, risk derailing momentum before the season fully gets going. As Steele rightly pointed out, “There’s a few holes in the squad that needs addressing before the window shuts in three weeks time.”
Slot has proven his credentials, but this is a new challenge altogether. Winning while chasing is one thing. Defending your crown with a bruised squad is something else entirely. Reinforcements are not a luxury, they are a necessity if Liverpool want to stay at the top.
