Kostas Tsimikas completed his season-long loan move to AS Roma on Sunday. The Greek left-back joined Roma after Liverpool signed Milos Kerkez from Bournemouth for £25 million in July.
Liverpool wanted a permanent sale but settled for a loan arrangement. Roma will cover Tsimikas’s wages for the 2025-26 season. The deal includes no option to buy.
Squad Position Changed
Arne Slot left Tsimikas out of two consecutive matchday squads. He missed the Community Shield against Crystal Palace and Liverpool’s Premier League opener against Bournemouth. Kerkez started both matches while Andy Robertson provided bench cover.
Tsimikas played 1,675 minutes across all competitions last season. Only 833 minutes came in Premier League matches. He made 29 appearances total in 2024-25, his highest tally in five seasons at Liverpool.
Liverpool signed Tsimikas from Olympiacos for £11.75 million in August 2020. He has two years remaining on his current contract, which runs until 2027.
Liverpool Statistics
Tsimikas made 115 appearances for Liverpool in five seasons. He recorded 18 assists across all competitions and 10 assists in 66 Premier League games.
His Premier League defensive numbers show 91 tackles with 59% success rate, 39 interceptions, and 59 clearances. He created 11 big chances and delivered 339 crosses with 23% accuracy.
Tsimikas won four trophies at Liverpool. He scored the decisive penalty in the 2022 FA Cup final shootout against Chelsea. Liverpool won the Premier League in 2024-25, two League Cups in 2022 and 2024, and the FA Cup in 2022.
He earned 41 caps for Greece since making his senior debut in October 2018. Greece named him their Footballer of the Year in 2020 before he joined Liverpool.
Roma’s Situation
AS Roma finished fifth in Serie A last season under Claudio Ranieri. Gian Piero Gasperini replaced Ranieri as manager after leading Atalanta to Europa League victory in 2024.
Roma needed cover for left-back Angelino. They already signed Evan Ferguson from Brighton and Leon Bailey from Aston Villa this summer. The club will compete in the Europa League after missing Champions League qualification.
Roma have started the new season with two league wins. Tsimikas will wear number 37 for the Italian club.
Financial Details
Liverpool raised £216 million from player sales this summer before Tsimikas’s loan departure. The club sold Ben Doak to Bournemouth for £25 million as part of their transfer business.
Roma covering Tsimikas’s full wages removes his salary from Liverpool’s payroll. Liverpool will reassess his future when the loan expires in summer 2026.
Transfer betting markets linked Tsimikas with Nottingham Forest, Valencia, and Atletico Madrid. Late transfer moves give bettors more options on bookies not on GamStop when UK platforms have restrictions.
Squad Changes
Liverpool now have Robertson and Kerkez as their left-back options. Joe Gomez can also play the position when needed.
Tsimikas becomes Roma’s third signing from Premier League clubs this window. The loan lets both clubs see how things work out without buying him permanently.
The 29-year-old made his Liverpool debut against Lincoln City in the EFL Cup on September 24, 2020. His Premier League debut came as a substitute against Manchester City in November 2020.
Tsimikas has European experience with 15 Champions League appearances for Liverpool and 12 for Olympiacos. He also played in the Europa League during loan spells with Esbjerg in Denmark and Willem II in the Netherlands.
His set pieces and crosses should work well in Serie A. Italian teams like defenders who help with attacks too.
