Fowler and Owen nominated for Premier League Hall of Fame

Fowler and Owen recognised among elite

Liverpool’s rich history in the Premier League has produced its share of legends, and now two more names stand on the brink of official recognition. Robbie Fowler and Michael Owen, both academy graduates who illuminated Anfield with goals and glory, have been nominated for the Premier League Hall of Fame.

The Hall of Fame, created in 2021, has so far inducted 22 players and two managers. Steven Gerrard remains the only Liverpool man honoured, with Manchester United, Arsenal and Chelsea dominating the list. Now, with Fowler and Owen on the ballot, the red half of Merseyside has reason to push for greater representation.

Liverpool’s legacy in Premier League era

Before Jurgen Klopp delivered the long-awaited league title in 2020, Liverpool were defined by near misses. Yet those campaigns were built on the brilliance of individuals. Fowler’s predatory instincts earned him the nickname “God” among the Kop. Owen, meanwhile, won the Ballon d’Or in 2001, a rare accolade for an English forward.

Between them they scored 313 Premier League goals, numbers that underline why both deserve to be in the conversation. The challenge, of course, is perception. Owen’s later years at Manchester United remain a sore point for many Liverpool supporters. Fowler, however, continues to enjoy unshakeable affection.

Premier League nominees announced

The latest shortlist includes 15 names, with fans asked to vote two into the Hall of Fame. Alongside Fowler and Owen are modern greats such as Cesc Fabregas, Eden Hazard, David Silva and Yaya Toure. Predictably, Sir Alex Ferguson’s Manchester United contingent is well represented, with six of his former players included.

It is this dominance that has left Liverpool under-represented in the Hall of Fame. For a club that has twice lifted the Premier League in the past five years, the absence of more inductees feels jarring. Fowler and Owen provide an opportunity to address that imbalance.

How supporters can vote

Voting is open on the Premier League’s official website. Each fan can select two players, with the winners joining a roster of greats that includes Alan Shearer, Frank Lampard and Gerrard. For Liverpool fans, the choice is clear. Fowler embodies the club’s traditions, its connection to the city and its unbreakable bond with supporters.

Owen’s record is undeniable, but sentiment will lean towards Fowler. In a contest shaped by numbers and narratives, Liverpool fans are likely to give their nod to the man they call God.
