Liverpool Move Slips Away for Guehi
By the final hours of the summer transfer window, Liverpool appeared ready to add Marc Guehi to their defensive ranks. The Crystal Palace captain had undergone a medical, agreed personal terms and was preparing for a five-year contract at Anfield. A £35 million fee was in place, with a 10% sell-on clause agreed. For a brief window, everything looked set.
Collapse of a Deal
What Liverpool could not predict was the ripple effect of Palace’s replacement strategy. Brighton’s Igor Julio, targeted to fill Guehi’s shoes, opted for West Ham United instead. With no like-for-like solution secured, Palace turned to Toulouse prospect Jaydee Canvot. However, manager Oliver Glasner judged that as inadequate cover. Reports suggest Glasner was so firm in his stance that he threatened to resign if the deal went ahead.

Faced with keeping harmony in the dugout or cashing in on Guehi, chairman Steve Parish chose to pull the plug. For Liverpool, it was frustration. For Guehi, it meant watching his chance disappear despite weeks of anticipation.
Guehi’s Response
Now, with Palace preparing for their Conference League clash with Dynamo Kyiv, Guehi has broken his silence. His words carry a quiet acceptance of how events unfolded.
“I don’t have much to say, to be honest,” he admitted when asked about the failed move.
“I’m focused on playing football and playing for this club. But to the fans (I want to say) thank you very much for your support. I definitely feel it.”
For a player long linked with the top end of the Premier League, Guehi’s composure reflects his maturity.
Focus on Palace Ambitions
When asked about the honour of leading Palace in Europe, Guehi steered clear of self-congratulation. His priority remains the team’s collective goals.
“It’s something I don’t think of at all. My only focus is on the club, I’m not too worried about any personal accolades. As long as the team is where it needs to be I’m happy.”
“When you’ve tasted success you’re definitely not satisfied and do want more. Everyone at the club strives for more. We’ve seen what we can do. If we keep our heads down, hopefully we can have many more opportunities.”
Liverpool may have to wait to see if another chance emerges, but for now Guehi’s energy belongs firmly to Crystal Palace.
