Konate Criticised After Brentford Defeat Raises Alarming Questions
Liverpool’s dismal run of form continued in West London as Brentford exposed deep flaws in Arne Slot’s side. Four consecutive defeats have left the Reds seven points behind Arsenal, and the manner of their latest loss has sparked strong criticism.
Foster ‘Shocked’ by Konate’s Reaction
Former goalkeeper Ben Foster expressed disbelief at what he witnessed from Ibrahima Konate during Liverpool’s 3–2 defeat, specifically in the build-up to Kevin Shade’s goal. Speaking on The Fozcast, Foster said, “I want to talk about one of the goals in particular, Ibrahima Konate’s defending for the Shade goal. The unwillingness to step into somebody is getting into some of these players’ heads.

“I was so shocked by Konate’s body language as he knows he’s been done by the run, which is fine, but he probably needed to be a little better at reading it. But then it was his unwillingness to get back in and really make a last-gasp tackle, he didn’t want to know. He was so happy to let Shade get the ball onto his right foot and shoot. He just gave up. Even Shade was probably expecting a bit of contact to put him off, but Konate didn’t make it uncomfortable for him one bit.”
Defensive Disarray Highlights Wider Concerns
Liverpool’s issues go beyond one lapse. Brentford’s first goal came from a long throw-in that the defence failed to clear, and the second demonstrated how easily teams can carve them open. Konate, signed for £36 million, was expected to be a cornerstone of stability, but recent performances have reflected uncertainty rather than authority.
The Reds struggled to win first or second balls, a worrying sign for a team that once prided itself on control and intensity. It was not only about defensive positioning, but also attitude and anticipation, elements that defined Liverpool at their best.
Slot Faces a Major Test of Resolve
Arne Slot now faces an early examination of his leadership. His players appear short on confidence, rhythm and aggression, particularly at the back. With fixtures coming thick and fast, the Dutch coach must find a solution to restore defensive reliability and belief in a squad still carrying the weight of expectation from last season’s title-winning campaign.
Liverpool’s next steps will define whether this slump becomes a crisis or a turning point.
