Liverpool Focus After West Ham United Win
Liverpool arrived at the London Stadium under real pressure and with questions swirling around their direction. Nine defeats in twelve had placed Arne Slot under sharp scrutiny, and the trip to West Ham United looked like a crossroads moment. Instead, Liverpool delivered a controlled 2-0 win and Joe Gomez, back in the Premier League starting line-up for the first time in almost a year, played with authority and calm.
The defender embraced the significance of his return and the importance of unity at a time when the club needed it most. Reflecting on the match, he said: “Obviously it means a lot for me [to start in the Premier League again]. The last time I was here, it was where I got my first injury, but I do everything I can to stay available and try to help the squad. The main thing is just us sticking together, it’s a tough schedule now with back-to-back [games]. We’ve just to go again, and we’ll do that.”
Against West Ham United, Gomez’s discipline at right back offered Liverpool a structure they had been missing during their poor run. He completed the ninety minutes with confidence, contributed defensively in tight moments and capped his performance with the assist for Cody Gakpo’s late clincher. With Alexander Isak also on the scoresheet, Liverpool found precisely the efficiency they had lacked through the previous month.

Tactical Reset For Stability
Gomez explained that Liverpool focused on reinforcing their defensive base, an approach that seemed overdue after a difficult sequence. “Obviously I think the quality of the team is never going to just dissipate and not be there. I think there was definitely an emphasis on trying to have a solid foundation and trying to keep a clean sheet and defensively being sound, and then we know we have so much quality going forward that things will happen,” he said.
Slot’s side played with clearer distances between units and avoided the expansive risk taking that had exposed them recently. Gomez acknowledged that this was intentional, saying: “Yeah, I think definitely. Obviously we want to play a style of football where it’s combinations and certain patterns of play but at the same time that can sometimes leave us a bit open. It’s obviously a balance and we’re also away from home.”
Liverpool looked more measured, more pragmatic and more aware of game management situations. It may not be the long term blueprint for Slot’s Liverpool but it provided the stability they required in this moment.
Leadership In Difficult Moments
With a decade at Liverpool behind him, Gomez understands volatile spells better than most. “It’s been tough. Everyone obviously takes it differently, for the boys who have just come it probably feels different to how I’ve seen it [in the past]. Obviously there is a massive expectation at this club and you’ve got to feel the weight of the shirt and do your best for the badge,” he said.
His influence in the dressing room was crucial during the slump. “I think it’s trying to keep a positive energy, trying to influence the boys in the right way, setting an example on the training pitch, being positive and just keeping the mood,” he added. His support for younger players, reminding them to “keep going”, underlined the togetherness he believes will be central to Liverpool’s recovery.
Momentum As Sunderland And Leeds Await
Liverpool needed reassurance and they found it at West Ham United. The performance did not solve everything but it provided a path back to confidence at a time when Slot required it most. With Sunderland and Leeds United to come this week, Liverpool know that progress depends on consistency.
If the win at West Ham United becomes that bounce board Gomez mentioned, then this could be the moment the season begins to turn.
