Slot condemns Van de Ven challenge as Isak setback deepens Liverpool injury concerns
Liverpool are bracing themselves for an extended spell without Alexander Isak after the forward underwent surgery following a serious injury sustained against Tottenham, an incident that has drawn an unusually forthright response from head coach Arne Slot.
The injury, suffered during Liverpool’s league victory in north London, has been described internally as a major blow at a crucial point in the campaign. Slot, speaking at length in his pre-match press conference, made clear his frustration not only at losing a key player, but at the manner in which the injury occurred.

Isak injury diagnosis and recovery timeline
Isak required surgery after fracturing his lower leg and damaging his ankle as a result of a scissor-style challenge from Micky van de Ven. The procedure has been deemed successful, but the striker now faces a lengthy rehabilitation period that will rule him out for a significant portion of the season.
Slot confirmed the scale of the setback, saying: “It’s going to be a long injury, for a couple of months. That’s a big, big, big disappointment for him and as a result of course also for us.”
While there remains hope that Isak could return before the campaign concludes, there is no firm timescale, with Liverpool prioritising caution over speed in his recovery. The forward had only recently been building momentum after a disrupted start to the season, adding to the sense of misfortune surrounding the injury.
Slot acknowledged that frustration, describing Isak as “unlucky” given the timing, just as he was nearing full fitness and rhythm.
Van de Ven tackle draws fierce criticism
Slot’s strongest comments were reserved for the challenge itself, which he labelled as reckless and inherently dangerous. The Liverpool head coach was keen to differentiate between accidental contact and tackles that, by their nature, carry a high risk of serious injury.
“This was for me a reckless challenge,” Slot said. “I think I’ve said a lot about the tackle of Xavi Simons, which was for me completely unintentional, and I don’t think you will ever get an injury out of a tackle like that.”
He went on to underline why he felt the van de Ven challenge crossed a line, adding: “The tackle of Van de Ven, I think if you make that tackle 10 times, I think 10 times there is a serious chance that a player gets a serious injury.”
Those remarks reflect a broader concern within Liverpool about player safety and the consistency with which high-risk challenges are judged. While there has been no suggestion of retrospective punishment, Slot’s comments have placed renewed focus on how such incidents are viewed across the game.
Liverpool squad faces mounting pressure
Isak’s injury compounds an already challenging period for Liverpool, who are dealing with multiple absences and suspensions across the squad. With options limited, Slot has called on those available to show resilience and unity during a demanding run of fixtures.
“I think my first and only thoughts are on the upcoming two games. Two difficult ones again, two home ones that’s really nice,” he said, before outlining the message to his players.
“So I think it’s a time for the players we do have available to do what they’ve done a few times: roll their sleeves up.”
Slot was also keen to stress the importance of the supporters during this period, making a direct appeal for collective effort: “Not only our players, our fans as well, to help us in the best possible way to get the results we want in the upcoming two games.”
He added: “Because the players that are available need to give everything they have, as the fans usually do and I expect them to do now again as well.”
Injury impact stretches beyond the short term
Beyond the immediate disruption to Liverpool’s attacking plans, the Isak injury raises wider questions about workload, intensity and risk in modern football. Slot’s pointed comments suggest a belief that certain types of challenges pose an unacceptable danger, regardless of intent.
For Liverpool, the focus now shifts to adaptation. Tactical adjustments, squad rotation and reliance on depth will be central themes as the season unfolds without one of their key attacking figures. Isak’s rehabilitation will be closely monitored, with the hope that he can return in time to play a meaningful role later in the campaign.
Until then, Slot’s message is clear: adversity must be met head-on, with both players and supporters pulling in the same direction as Liverpool navigate another testing chapter shaped by injury.
