Liverpool and Szoboszlai: Contract Talks Reflect Club’s Summer Uncertainty
Dominik Szoboszlai’s future at Liverpool is coming into sharp focus as he prepares to enter the final two years of his contract. Speaking on Media Matters for Anfield Index, journalist David Lynch offered an informed take on the evolving situation, noting, “Liverpool will be keen to reward that,” referencing Szoboszlai’s season-long impact.
The discussion between host Dave Davis and David Lynch came in the aftermath of Liverpool’s 3-0 Champions League away win at Marseille, a performance that saw Szoboszlai named official man of the match. The Hungarian international was key, contributing a clever “draft excluder-style free-kick” and a slick assist that signalled, in Davis’s words, “the old Dominik Szoboszlai was back.”
Szoboszlai’s Consistency and Liverpool’s Next Move
Despite recent mixed form, Lynch was firm in his evaluation of Szoboszlai’s campaign. “He’s been pretty much Liverpool’s best player this season,” he stated. While pointing to occasional decision-making flaws in the final third, Lynch underlined the midfielder’s all-round contribution: “He gives you legs, breaking on both sides of the ball, stopping counters, creating counters… good passing range… and a clever free-kick.”
This level of performance has inevitably raised questions about a potential contract extension, especially with Szoboszlai publicly acknowledging discussions without confirming any conclusions. Referencing a recent interview, Davis highlighted Szoboszlai’s revealing comment: “There have been talks, but for sure not any decision has been made.” Lynch interpreted this carefully, remarking, “I think all players will do that… Is this going to be the right place for me?”
Contract Delays and Club Direction
Lynch didn’t downplay the broader context: “They will probably drag it down to the last 18 months before giving him his deal because that seems to be the way at the moment.” With Arne Slot’s own future at the club undecided, and with Liverpool yet to secure Champions League football for next season, there is a level of caution from Szoboszlai’s camp.

“It could well link to Arne Slot’s future,” Davis speculated, suggesting that Szoboszlai’s contract discussions might hinge on the managerial direction of the club. Lynch agreed: “Liverpool have got to make a convincing pitch that they’re going to be good and regularly challenge for titles.”
Tactical Fit and Player Value
Beyond contracts and negotiations, Lynch made clear that Szoboszlai is a cornerstone for Liverpool’s present and future: “He’s really really important.” Slot’s system has brought out some of Szoboszlai’s best attributes, and as Davis pointed out, “surely… he’s going to be waiting to see who would the head coach be, are Liverpool in the Champions League, and if they’re not, who’s in at the table for me?”
With big decisions looming for both player and club, Liverpool find themselves at a familiar crossroads. As Lynch summarised, “It’s a big decision for these players, and Liverpool have to make a convincing pitch.”
