Dominik Szoboszlai in Contract Talks Amid Hints at Liverpool Captaincy Ambitions
Liverpool midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai is currently in early-stage contract talks with the club, with growing belief that the Hungarian international could one day captain the Reds. Speaking on Media Matters for Anfield Index, journalist Lewis Steele offered fresh insight into Szoboszlai’s contract situation and his increasing influence both on and off the pitch.
Szoboszlai Wants a New Deal Reflecting His Importance
Szoboszlai has emerged as one of Liverpool’s standout performers this season, and Steele believes the 25-year-old is keen to be rewarded accordingly. “I think he wants a new deal and I think he will get a new deal,” he said.
The midfielder has already acknowledged that talks are ongoing. “New deal talks from now on, it’s not in my hands,” Szoboszlai recently told the media. Steele interpreted those comments as a message to the club hierarchy. “Reading those comments… that struck to me as almost, I’ve been your best player this season. Make sure you pay me as such,” he remarked.
With key squad figures like Mohamed Salah, Andy Robertson and Alisson Becker potentially nearing the end of their Liverpool tenures, there’s a sense that Szoboszlai’s status is rapidly rising.
Leadership Qualities on and off the Pitch
Szoboszlai has increasingly embraced a leadership role within the squad, and Steele revealed the midfielder has not been shy about his ambitions. “I asked him about his leadership qualities, and he was more than happy to talk about that,” said Steele.
In fact, Steele believes Szoboszlai may be positioning himself for the captain’s armband in the future. “I think he’s almost making a little pitch to be the captain, when Virgil leaves at the end of next season, probably,” he suggested.

Currently, vice-captain Andy Robertson and senior players like Salah and Alisson are seen as leaders, but with their futures uncertain, Szoboszlai could emerge as a long-term option. “Suddenly you’re thinking Szoboszlai could be the man to be the leader,” said Steele.
Liverpool Likely to Act on Contract Talks
Szoboszlai’s current deal runs until 2028, so there is no immediate urgency, but Steele warned Liverpool not to repeat past mistakes. “I don’t think Liverpool are going to be in a massive rush to do that just yet,” he said, “but they probably should, judging on how they let Trent run down his contract and things like that.”
Given his consistent form and growing influence, Szoboszlai looks increasingly central to Liverpool’s plans — both in midfield and possibly in leadership.
