David Lynch Praises Szoboszlai but Fears for His Liverpool Future

Following Liverpool’s 2-1 defeat to Manchester City at Anfield, journalist David Lynch highlighted Dominik Szoboszlai’s standout performance, but admitted growing concern over the Hungarian midfielder’s future at the club.

Speaking on Media Matters for Anfield Index, Lynch said, “He’s been brilliant all season and fair play to him, because it’s not been easy.” Szoboszlai opened the scoring for Liverpool with a stunning free-kick in front of the Kop, but it was not enough to secure a result as the Reds once again collapsed late on.

Despite the individual display, Lynch acknowledged a worrying subtext: “You’re kind of seeing like captain performances, but again, you know, it’s a nightmare, but there’s that little negativity in the back of your mind as well.”

Standout performer in a failing side

Szoboszlai has been one of the few bright spots in a difficult campaign, and Lynch made that clear: “Time and time again, he’s delivered for Liverpool this season. He keeps being let down by those around him.”

His consistency has set him apart from his teammates: “Others are definitely finding it hard to reach their best form and he’s just been pretty relentless all the way through.”

On the match itself, Lynch praised his impact on both sides of the ball. “His work rate we know about, the quality’s starting to show and that danger he has from free kicks is massive. He could have won the game for Liverpool as he did against Arsenal earlier in the season.”

Contract concerns and the Europa League shadow

While Lynch praised Szoboszlai’s commitment and technical ability, he admitted the bigger picture was unsettling: “He’s just a brilliant player, isn’t he?” But the tone shifted when Lynch addressed Szoboszlai’s contract situation and the likely direction of the team.

He warned, “You’re thinking about, oh, what he said about the contracts is worrying. And you know, Liverpool are heading for the Europa League next season. Is he going to want to stick around for that?”

This uncertainty is feeding a wider anxiety among the fanbase, and Lynch is not immune to it: “Hopefully Liverpool can tie him down because you don’t want that kind of negativity to overtake it.”

Szoboszlai setting the standard

Even in defeat, Lynch said Szoboszlai showed the traits fans want to see: “He really does everything you want to see as a fan on the pitch in terms of his work rate… but also, yeah, immense quality.”

Despite being used out of position at times, Lynch credited him for adapting: “He doesn’t like playing right-back, but I think he does well when he is there.”

Ultimately, Lynch’s praise was matched by concern — concern that Liverpool’s inability to match Szoboszlai’s performances on the pitch, and failure to secure his long-term future, could lead to a loss the club cannot afford.
