Easily one of the most iconic clubs in the Premier League, Liverpool FC remains one of the most attractive names in world football. As a result, droves of top-class players have played in front of The Kop, and some have gone on to become club legends.
This gives many former players and managers a huge amount of appeal in works beyond Anfield. Like we’ve seen with Jürgen Klopp in those hotel adverts, Liverpool legends are big selling points. One series that looks to deliver players a fully-themed experience based on sporting legends is the aptly named Sporting Legends series.
So, could we see a great of Anfield enter into the series with their own dedicated instalment, joining icons of other major British sports?
What is the Sporting Legends Series?
The Sporting Legends series is a long-running series of games created by Playtech and Rarestone Gaming. So far, the two headline acts of the series found among the many online bingo games and slot titles are Frank Bruno: Sporting Legends and Frankie Dettori: Sporting Legends.
While many branded games populate the platform, such as with The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live Game and Deal or No Deal: Banker’s Bonanza, the Sporting Legends offer a distinct level of brand appeal. Sports stars have a storied connection to fans that goes beyond the ties of simply enjoying entertainment.
Frank Bruno’s rumbles in the ring and Dettori’s numerous races won have entrenched them as heroes to millions. Importantly for this article, the series has dipped into football. Joining Bruno and Dettori, as well as Ronnie O’Sullivan and Brian Lara, is Roberto Carlos in his own Sporting Legends game, paving the way for a Liverpool icon.
Liverpool Legends Worthy of Entry
Starting with the players, three retired players stand out as the top picks from the many legends of the club. Those three would be Kenny Dalglish, Steven Gerrard, and John Barnes. All were fantastic players for Liverpool, and it’s always an interesting debate around whether Gerrard or Dalglish was truly the best Red of all time.
John Barnes, however, was and still is larger than life. His aura took him well beyond the pitch to become beloved in the public eye, be it out and about or on TV shows. Of the three, it’s Barnes who best imbues a sense of excitement and entertainment beyond real football being played, making him perfect for Sporting Legends.
As for managers, there’s only really one who could pull off such a pivot. It’s the bright white teeth and the many hired to sell a hotel price comparison app. Jürgen Klopp’s charisma, as well as his gaudy legacy at Liverpool, make him ideal for such a pivot. A Jürgen Klopp: Sporting Legends game would undoubtedly generate a huge number of clicks.
Of course, these aren’t the only potential picks for a new entry to the Sporting Legends series. Yet, for a combination of their on-pitch successes, legacy at Liverpool, and enduring appeal among football fans, Barnes and Klopp seem like the best picks if one were ever to be made.
